My 11-year-old dog has a mouth lump pushing a tooth. What to do?

Hello, i've just found a lump in my maltese x shih tzu's mouth. She is about 11 years old. it is pushing her bottom tooth up. pic attached

Thanks for the pictures I see what you are worried about. Possible causes of the mass are: a benign over growth of gum tissue, an epulis, or cancerous growths. Some epulids are: Fibromatous, ossifying, and acanthomatous. Acanthomatous epuli, in particular, are highly invasive to the bone and are usually located on the front part of the lower jaw.

It is sadly impossible to tell from just looking at the mass to say what it could be. I recommend you make an appointment with your Vet. Lucky will have to go under anesthesia, have dental X-rays taken of the area and the mass biopsied or removed, if able.

I would not consider that to be normal. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Butch to see what they think about the swelling. Your vet can perform a simple test called a fine needle aspirate where they use a small needle to collect some cells from the mass, then look at them under the microscope. They may even need to send the cells to the lab for a pathologist to examine them, so we know what the mass is and can determine the best way to treat it.

If it looks very similar to the one that was removed and tested, it’s probably the same thing. (Though we can never guarantee as some kids of cancer can look similar.) Usually there is nothing to do treatment or prevention-wise except remove them at routine dental cleaning. My dog has a gum lump where her front teeth are missing. What is it?

That lump of tissue needs to be checked out by the veterinarian. Dogs do get tumors in the mouth. They can also get severe dental infections which can lead to hyperplasia of the gum tissue. The doctor may need to sedate Bumbie to get a thorough exam and a tissue sample of the lump to determine if this is a tumor or something else. Once the doctor examines Bumbie, they will discuss what the best course of action is. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My dog has a gum lump and eating less. Should I take him to the vet?

Hi, While I can’t say with certainty without an exam, I would strongly recommend having this gingival mass evaluated by a veterinarian. In many cases these are benign gingival hyperplasia (just meaning excessive tissue), but other times these masses can be malignant cancer. Therefore, catching it early will make a difference in the potential success of treatment. I hope Kosmo just has some hyper plastic gum tissue! Best of luck.

That looks like a mass. Sometimes these are benign and sometimes they are not. Eva needs to have this mass removed to be tested but she likely cannot chew normally because this mass is growing over her teeth. Make an appointment. I hope this helps.

I'm not sure when you last discussed having it removed with her vet, but given that it has grown more and is bleeding, I think you should discuss removing it again. Due to her age, there is a chance this lump could be cancer, but it needs to biopsied first before any determination could be made as to whether or not it's cancer. I'd schedule an appointment with her vet. I hope this helps.
