My goat's scrotum is swollen and painful after banding. What to do?

Do not band him at this age. It is very very painful. Also there is a chance of him getting a tetanus infection if he is not vaccinated against clostridial infections. It would be much better to have him castrated by the ver (either open castration or with a burdizzo, which is where the seminal and blood vessels are squeezed to where there is no more blood flow to the testicles) I personally do not think banding is a good idea as it is very painful over a long period of time, whereas castration via burdizzo is a 2 second pain and does the job just as well.

I see that your dog is unneutered - one condition that can come on suddenly and be extremely painful is called testicular torsion. Basically, one of the testicles becomes twisted inside the scrotal sac, cutting off the blood supply and causing swelling and intense pain. Based on your description, I would be concerned about this possibility and would recommend getting your dog to a vet as soon as possible, since he is in a lot of distress and there is really nothing that can be done at home to help. Other possibilities would include a scrotal or testicular infection, a tumor, or even a scrotal hernia.

Poor guy...that does look uncomfortable. It may be infected, but I would suspect a discharge at the incision or a fever, lethargy. It is more likely that this is a scrotal hematoma. These typically do resolve in their own, but it can take weeks. Keep his activity level as low as possible to discourage more swelling, continue the anti inflammatory medication, make sure he cannot bite or lick it by using a “cone” if needed. It can provide some relief if he will allow you to do a cold compress on the area. Try wrapping an ice pack with cloth and apply to the area for 15 minutes..three times daily. Poor Timmy! That looks very painful. It's difficult to say for sure from just the picture but it appears that Timmy's scrotum and testicles are infected or even that the scrotum has ruptured. Tummy needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away as he will likely need surgery and prescription antibiotics to treat this issue. He will need to wear an e-collar to prevent him from licking the area. He will also need prescription pain medication as this looks very painful. Unfortunately, it is illegal for us to prescribe any medications without physically examining the pet. Swelling of the scrotum could be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, tumor, wound, or an abscess. The treatment for these varied problems depends on the cause. I would recommend that you call your local animal control office so that they can catch the stray and get him the care he needs to prevent suffering.

Banding is cruel and not the correct way to castrate a dog. You mustg take Pip to a vet for the testicle to be removed and the wound to be closed. Pip will also need antibiotics and pain medicine. You can put a cloth around Pip in the area of the testicle so the testicle and wound do not get dirty until you take him to a vet. You need to take him to a vet now.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gino! Is Gino eating and drinking? Is he urinating? Is there anyway you can re-post with pictures? Gino could have a testicular torsion, urethral prolapse (especially if you are seeing blood at his penis), a urinary tract infection or simply a skin infection on his belly or testicles or even fleas. I recommend extruding his penis and looking at the tip, checking his skin for fleas and pustules or red bumps. And if he is having trouble urinating and/or isn't eating he needs to see a Vet.
