My goat is wounded. Is it safe to give it human pain medicine?

Sounds like either enterotoxemia (Clostridium spp) or parasites like tapeworms. What parasites did you treat for? Tapeworms need a special deworming medication as they are not killed with a general dewormer. Are you vaccinating against Clostridial diseases? If you have a local vet, I suggest you consult with them.

She may have a grain bloat, have ingested something toxic or have an infection. I recommend having a vet take a look at her as soon as possible. In the meantime try to walk her a bit and she is she is interested in browsing or chewing any hay.

This commonly happens when they break their horns at the base. The tissue at the base can overgrow within a few days when injured like this. The best thing you can do is flush the area with warm water for five minutes. I do not recommend putting any soaps or antiseptics on the wound, because this can make it worse. If you can bandage the wound after flushing, then this would be helpful to prevent infection. Otherwise, it would be best to flush the wound once a day until the vet can get there. It's definitely best for the vet to see Louie soon, because these wounds commonly get infected; and if left for too long, the infection can get in the sinuses, which is very difficult to treat. Often times, these horn injuries require surgery and the horn may need to be removed. I hope that helps and Louie gets better soon.

Please clean and flush the wounds with warm water to prevent infection. Put pressure on them if they are bleeding. You can use aspirin for pain. There is a section on this website that has information and dosages for common over the counter medications. You may need a cone so she doesn’t lick the wounds. I am so sorry you and Prince are going through this. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Prince without consulting with your vet. Your veterinarian can prescribe safe medication to help with the pain, but aspirin may be dangerous for Prince, especially in his current condition.

If there is infection, she should be getting antibiotics. You can milk the udder, just discard the milk. Keeping the wound clean and dry will aid in healing. You can use diluted Betadine to clean it once or twice daily. Change the bedding frequently if she is in a stall. A serious wound should be addressed by a veterinarian experienced in treating small ruminants.

Hello. You should be able to treat this yourself. By the way it looks, I would be using wet dressings to help with drainage. You can use many materials, but the least expensive would be a woman's sanitary napkin or other thicker absorbant pad. Cut the pad to slightly larger than the wound & wet the bandage with sterile saline ( most pharmacies will have some type of simple saline wound wash ). Wet the pad so it is damp but not dripping & bandage this to the leg. No need for antibiotics, although plain granulated sugar or even honey placed on the pad will add an antimicrobial element to the dressing. Change the dressing daily & you will be surprised how much debris will be on the pad each day. Just keep doing this & the wound should start to look much better in another week to 10 days.
