My 3-month-old chicken was attacked. What can I do for her pain?

Hello. So much depends on where the wound is, how deep it is & how easy it is to handle the bird. Some wounds will heal very nicely on their own & it is surprising how quickly they can heal. I have treated & sewn up some of my own hens that survived raccoon attacks, some survive & others that appear less severely injured died. If the bird will allow you to clean the wound, use a skin cleanser like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ). Then, depending on how bad the wound is, you can use a triple antibiotic or even a wound spray like Catron which will also keep the flies off. All you can do is try, especially if there are no veterinarians in your area that will see birds ( call around, you might be surprised to find a vet that likes chickens ). Hi there. So sorry this happened to Floppy. The treatment you are doing so far is great. However, do not use the peroxide anymore. Peroxide is fine to use once after the initial injury but if you keep using it, it will kill all the tissue present in the wound including any new tissue trying to grow in so it will end up delaying healing. You should, from now on, flush the wounds with dilute Betadine or dilute Chlorhexidine solution twice a day as far inside the wound as you can get it. Also, be sure to keep her warm and dry. The SSD is my favorite and I'm glad you are using it. I am unable, by law, to provide any dosing information over the internet so I cannot help you with the Oxytetracycline dose. I can tell you that I have treated quite a few chickens for injuries like this and oxytetracycline is not the first choice for an antibiotic in this situation. I strongly suggest you take her to a vet for an exam. Many small animal hospitals will have a vet that will treat a chicken. If you don't want to do that then just keep doing what you are doing and hopefully she will respond. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

The aspirin can be used for a maximum of three days. Restrict her activity. Separate her from the flock if necessary. The increased respiration may be from pain or infection. If the lameness persists or worsens then have her examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating domestic fowl. Make sure she continues to eat and drink. Provide supplemental heat and keep her as stress free as possible until she sees the vet.

Hello. If you can keep her indoors, that would be best. You could also start her on an antibiotic made for poultry available at your feed coop. Other than that, make sure she eats & drinks, & if the foot gets worse or does not seem to be healing, please consider having her seen by your veterinarian. She is definitely in need of an examination by a veterinarian to assess the situation more carefully. Based on the information you've provided, it sounds like she could have some sort of upper respiratory infection, as these often can cause the eyes to crust up and shut completely. Antibiotics and anti inflammatory medication are usually the best bets for this sort of ailment. However, first things first, you'll need to have someone take a look at her to make sure there isn't a primary ocular issue going on instead. Hope this makes sense.

Just hold pressure for a few minutes using a clean cloth or gauze. you may have to hold him for a bit to prevent him from shaking his head in order to give the wound time to clot. If a deep wound or you can't stop the bleeding then veterinary attention may be needed. Depending on how open the wound is, you may need to keep the chicken indoors to prevent fly strike and maggots. I can't see much from the photos, but if the burn was bad enough to cause wounding on the skin or feathers (or internally) it would be best to seek veterinary care immediately from your vet or an ER clinic as the chick may need additional treatment such as medications and supportive care during healing.
