Sentinel has no tick coverage and does not kill fleas. It only sterilizes the eggs. I always go up a size to be safe as most dogs gain weight but rarely lose weight. It has a good safety margin so using the 25-50 pounds medicine would be best. You will continue to need the Simparica or nexgard with this

Over the counter flea products that are fine to use with sentinel include frontline plus, advantage and Advantix. Just be sure to not bathe your dog a couple days before or after applying any of those products as that can affect how effective they are.

I would NOT use sentinel in a nursing or lactating animal. The only two flea and tick drugs that I know of that are labeled for this are Frontline and Bravecto. Bravecto is prescription only and must be obtained through a veterinarian. Of note, most breeders won't even use those two anyway due to the increased risk of side effects to the puppies.

You are right to be concerned a lot ticks! Three is a lot of tick illness in the US. There are both oral and topical products that control fleas and ticks. Sentinel doesn't even kill fleas or prevent them from biting your pet. Nexgard is the only oral flea and tick med for pets under 6 months. Frontline is a topical product that kills fleas and ticks. Seresto collars are great and last 8 months. Because Sentinel doesn't even kill the fleas, there is no overlap if you ask your vet about one of these meds.

You're correct that Sentinel is considered a "passive" flea control product - it doesn't kill adult fleas, just keeps their eggs from being able to hatch. Capstar would be quite effective at killing any fleas that he currently has on him. It shouldn't be necessary to wash bedding, etc. since the Sentinel will ensure that the fleas are not able to reproduce. In my experience, some dogs do fine with Sentinel as their only flea control method if they are in an environment where they are rarely exposed to fleas. But if you're seeing fleas from time to time, or if your dog has flea allergies or other skin sensitivities, then I would recommend using an adulticide like Nexgard or Bravecto along with his Sentinel.
