Protein skimmers are an important part of an aquarium’s biological filtration. Protein skimmers come in a multitude of designs for function such as down-draft, counter-current, co-current and venturi skimming. Essentially all skimmers work in the same way, but the manner of foam fractionation could be different. While all have their pros and cons, all protein skimmers will greatly improve the filtration performance of your saltwater tank by removing organics, improving water quality and clarity as well as increasing dissolved oxygen.
Protein skimmers are essentially foam fractionators, protein skimmers function by bringing the water in contact with air bubbles thus creating a foam that helps remove dissolved organics. By removing these dissolved organics, you can remove these waste by-products prior to breaking down in the aquarium. Also, by removing these dissolved organics you can limit water discoloration.
This will be dependent on the protein skimmers size and the respective bio-load within the saltwater aquarium. The collection cup should be checked and/or cleaned at least three times per week. Clean the body of a protein skimmer every six months, this will be done to prevent coralline and hard body organism build up. Periodically check any flexible tubing for salt build up to prevent air flow issues in venturi protein skimming systems.
While protein skimmers are not necessary, they are an extremely beneficial part of a saltwater filtration system, removing organics and increasing dissolved oxygen.
In most cases it will not, proper protein skimming is heavily reliant on the density of the aquarium water. Saltwater density is significantly greater than freshwater. In a large volume situation, such as a large Koi pond, protein skimming could be beneficial but will require a specialized, high powered protein skimmer.

I have two gold fish that live in a 55 gal tank. The water is clear, but brown starts to accumulate on the inside of the glass, and on the ornaments in the tank. I have been using a few different water treatments, the water is clear. I use a sponge tank scrapper to get it off of the glass, but the ornaments are all covered with brown. Is there a fish or something else that would clean that stuff up?
Is it possible to keep wild caught saltwater fish as pets?

Have 60 gal tank with 2 largish Ryukin goldfish, doing well together in this tank for several months. I added 3 times different smaller Ryukin from different sources, acclimated by floating bag method, put in the tank with the larger Ryukin. All new fish died within 3-5 days, w/ signs of swim bladder problem - not remaining upright, then dies. Water tests all zeros, using Safe, API proper ph 7.5 & bacteria. Temp 78. Tank cleaned often.. Eat soaked Hikari sinking mini pellets, peas. Ideas?
what is the best way to control the ph in a discus tank?
I have recently got 2 gold fish(Saturday) night ish and got a medium size tank with no pump but told that dosnt matter at first the fish would swim little and stay near the stones/ground the next day the water went green the swam around abit more but kept going to the top of the tank and looked like gulping I was so worried so I thought I’d google it just carnt find much so I thought I’d leave it another day see if anything has changed and went to look at them this morn there was bubbles at top
Help! The submersible pump on my 3.7 gallon is making loud motor sounds and spitting out small bubbles that by morning cover the whole top of the tank. I’m scared for my fishes life what should I do?
Two of the fish fins are clamping down close to their body. I did 75% water change and hopefully they will get better. I do not have the water testing kit. Will buy soon. Is there any ways to get them better? I could see some of their scales are off. They sometimes don’t swim, they just stay there and let the water flow move them. I’m getting air stone soon. Do I need VERY strong filter for them? (It’s little filter) two of them is sometimes going up to surface?
