My teddy bear hamster is wobbling and confused. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male

I have a teddy bear hamster, 2 days ago he seemed to not be able to move his left side and his left eye was half closed. Then this morning there was a lump on his head, it is gone but now bald spot there. He is eating, but seems to be confused and not drinking much and wobbles and falls over... but all his movement has been improving but still not great.

Based on why you are describing I am concerned that Chewie may have suffered some sort of head trauma (perphaps by falling or hitting his head).

I would recommend watching him closely over the next 24 hours. If he continues to eat and drink he will likely be ok. If he seems lethargic, doesn’t want to eat, and is not moving around, I would recommend taking him to your vet to be examined. He may need some pain medication to help the swelling in his head.

I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
