My pet holds pee all day, only peeing during playtime. Is this safe?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | 11 months and 3 days old

It always hold in its pee for the whole day until l let it out of the cage for playtime, even though it did consume a lot of water. When it come out to play, it will poop and pee several times during its playtime. I'm worry that it will affect its health if it continue to do so.Can anything be done? Before this it will pee in the cage on its own even when its not playtime. It normally will pee and poop on the tray that is under the cage and i clean it daily. It's eating and behave like usual.

Hello!

Animals can be pretty picky about where they like to urinate and defecate. It's possible that Julius feels more comfortable urinating outside his cage than inside. You are right to be concerned, because constantly holding urine can put him at risk for urinary tract disease.

I would recommend experimenting with different litters or litter boxes until you find something Julius is more comfortable using in his enclosure.

I hope this helps! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
