My rabbit won't pee or eat after moving to a new cage. What to do?

Julius is a great name for a Rabbit. I am a little confused by your questions. it sounds like Julius was eating the old pellets well but when you tried to transition him to new pellets he stopped eating. When you offered him the old pellets he started eating again. If this is correct I would recommend slowly offering the new pellets while cutting back on the old pellets. You can even put them in the cage in different areas. I would not recommend mixing the pellets incase it makes Julius not eat at all. It is very important for rabbits to eat a large amount of roughage like timothy hay. I would recommend 90% roughage and only 10 % pellets. I hope that helps

However, if you notice that Julius is not eating, or has not defecated for over 24 hours, he may require veterinary attention.

Hello! Animals can be pretty picky about where they like to urinate and defecate. It's possible that Julius feels more comfortable urinating outside his cage than inside. You are right to be concerned, because constantly holding urine can put him at risk for urinary tract disease. I would recommend experimenting with different litters or litter boxes until you find something Julius is more comfortable using in his enclosure. I hope this helps! Your bunny was probably just used to eating the lettuce and is adjusting to his new diet. You did the right thing by offering him only the pellets and hay. This is what is most beneficial to him. Since his stools are normal I would not worry at this point. If he stops passing stools, stops eating, or if you suspect he is losing weight, then you should take him to the veterinarian to be checked out. I hope this helps. It sounds like your bunny is quite tidy and doesn't want to soil her cage. She will probably be easy to litter train, and then you will have somewhere in the cage for her to go. Make sure her cage is large enough that she has plenty of room to move around in, and so that her litter tray isn't near her food or water. You can use hay as a litter. To start training her, place her tray where she likes to go when she gets out of the cage. Put some of her poo and urine in the tray so that she knows that is where she needs to go. Once she is consistently using this tray, then move it into the cage. If she stops using it once in the cage, you might need to get her a bigger cage.

It sounds like Twitch might be a little shocked over his environmental change. If he was used to having free range over things like the bed and is now prohibited, this can be somewhat stressful. As long as he is eating a sufficient amount of food an continuing to poop close to his normal amount, I would not really start thinking he is truly ill just yet.

A sterile urine sample should be collected and submitted for urinalysis and culture. This will diagnose urinary tract infection, identify the responsible organism and determine the best antibiotic to use in treatment. Check the teeth for malocclusion or overgrowth. It is of critical importance to get Lilly eating again. Supportive care (subcutaneous fluids, force feeding, etc) should be continued. Always have timothy hay or similar grasses available. An abdominal x-rays should be considered to diagnose foreign body, large hair balls or tumors in the abdomen. A hairball paste may aid in passage of any hairballs. If you don't have experience force feeding, have your veterinarian show you how. If available, Oxbow Critical Care is an excellent formula to feed sick or injured rabbits.
