My pet has a fast-growing open lump with hair loss. What can I do?

What is this? It started off as a small lump that i thought was a bug bite. Over the past few years it started growing at a fairly fast rate. It was a few days ago that it became open. He has hairloss over the lump, and i don't have a vet near me that can see him. Is there anything i can do?

Hello. Unfortunately, this may be a tumor and Foxy may have cancer. Other than trying to keep things as clean as possible, not much more can be done for him.. Start by using a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at any pharmacy ) & gently clean the area a couple of times each day. Pick up some Vetericyn spray & use this after cleaning. This will cut down on possible infection, but this will probably never totally heal. As long as Foxy is eating well, you might be able to manage things for a while, but if you can find a veterinarian to take a look, perhaps it can still be removed. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. My dog's bleeding, growing lump looks like a scab. What is it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend taking Sable to the vet to look at the growth closer and find out what it is. The vet can stick a needle in it and look at the cells under a microscope to determine if it’s cancerous or not. Because the tissue/skin is fragile it likely won’t stop bleeding and may need to be surgically removed. I would leave it alone until the vet looks at it so you don’t disrupt the blood clot that forms. Good luck and kisses to Sable!

Hello. This looks like a possible infected hair follicle of sebaceous gland infection. It is probably not dangerous, especially since your dog is still quite young. I would gently clean the area with something like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) & if it seems to be getting worse, bothering your dog, or begins to ooze, please see your vet as soon as possible. My dog's neck lump was hard, now mushy. Is it a sting or foxtail?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am definitely concerned about things in this location and this amount of swelling. The concern being that this amount of swelling in this area could press on the airways and important vessels. The only way to know for sure what’s going on would be to have your vet sedate him, and try to lance the area. If it’s an abscess, it will have to be opened to drain anyways and then you would continue antibiotics. If it is all firm tissue, it could be a sting, a cancer, or an area of inflammation due to something like a fox tail. Best wishes to you and Flash!

My old dog has a fast-growing, oozing, smelly leg lump. What is it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. Given the fact that it is growing quickly, a malignant tumor is more likely. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. I'd take Foxy Brown (LOVE her name!) into the vet to have this checked out. It could be a cyst that keeps filling up, and it may need to be removed surgically to get rid of it completely. Have her seen by a vet in the next couple of days. I hope this helps!

I’m sorry you are having issues with Coco. This mass appears to have become wuite large and has started to necrose in the center. This will continue to get bigger and remain infected if it is not surgically removed. The only thing you can do is clean the surface, but that is really not very helpful.
