My dog has a draining, crusty bump on her leg. What should I do?

That could be the result of a traumatic skin injury of potentially a spot of infected skin. I would recommend not to remove the crust and keep the area clean with salt water bath (10 teaspoons of salt in 1 liter of water twice daily) for the next 3-4 days. If not resolving by then a check up would be needed. Hello. Unfortunately, this may be a tumor and Foxy may have cancer. Other than trying to keep things as clean as possible, not much more can be done for him.. Start by using a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at any pharmacy ) & gently clean the area a couple of times each day. Pick up some Vetericyn spray & use this after cleaning. This will cut down on possible infection, but this will probably never totally heal. As long as Foxy is eating well, you might be able to manage things for a while, but if you can find a veterinarian to take a look, perhaps it can still be removed. This could be a bug bite, a benign cyst draining, or a local infection. I would recommend to clean it with a a mild soap and water and put some neosporin on it. I would place a cone collar on him if needed to prevent any licking. I would contact your vet to ensure he doesn't need any oral antibiotics. I hope this helps!

It may be bleeding because he's been picking at it. Apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding, then put a bandage on it to protect it. This bump on Aspen's leg could be a cyst, a lipoma, a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. Any suspicious bumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the bump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would take Aspen into the vet tomorrow to have the bump examined and diagnosed so it can be treated.

Hello, thank you for your question about Sky. Based on the photo you've attached it is possible that this lesion is secondary to a blood blister or cyst-like lesion. It could also be a mild skin infection. Dogs can develop skin masses/tumors such as mast cell tumors. I would recommend having Sky seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine the area and discuss the need for additional testing such as an impression of the area or collecting a small needle sample. I would recommend that Spoko have this bump checked out. It could be anything from a skin tag or wart that gets irritated because he licks, to an infection or foreign body (something stuck under the skin), to a small tumor. After examination, a vet may decide to collect a small sample of cells to look at under a microscope to hopefully determine the cause so that an appropriate treatment plan can be created. While you wait for his appointment, try to keep Spoko from licking the bump; he may need to wear an e-collar/cone to prevent this.
