Rabbit scratching neck, has a scab. Should I take her to the vet?

You can apply a topical antibiotic ointment/cream to it daily. If it does not appear to be healing well after 7 days then you should take Bun Bun to the vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hello, I would recommend taking Bun Bun into a veterinarian to be examined. Recurring scabs may be a sign of a chronic infection with a bacteria called Pasteurella, which is a common problem in rabbits. Scabs could also be coming from a fungal infection, commonly called ringworm, that can be spread to people. Scabs could also come from herself scratching- a parasitic infection of mites or fleas may be causing her scratch excessively. Most of these problems can be treated fairly easily with a course of medications once they are properly diagnosed. If the scabs are coming from being attacked by her sister, she needs to live separately from her for her own safety. I hope this is helpful. If it is just a superficial scratch and it appears that the bleeding already resolved, you may continue to monitor it. If at some point a discharge develops and it appears to be getting infected, have him examined then. You may clean the area with soapy water. However, if it seems deep, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It is hard to know for sure without being able to see it though I hope this is helpful. There are multiple possibilities, but the most common would be either fight wounds or skin infection. Infection could be bacterial or fungal such as ringworm. I would encourage you to have them examined by your veterinarian to see if they need any medications. Good luck and I hope they resolve quickly.

Unfortunately without a picture, I cannot tell you what the scratch is. Also, I am not sure what body part an "eat" is. In general, if the scratch is no longer bleeding, you can monitor it before taking Bun Bun into the veterinarian. You do need to monitor the area closely, however, for redness, swelling, discharge that is white, clear, or green in color, and pain. If any of these occur, a visit to your veterinarian is indicated as these can all be signs of infection. Infections often require treatment with antibiotics, and pain relieving medications. Please do not administer any antibiotics or pain medications that you have at home, as many of these can hurt rabbits due to their specialized gastrointestinal tracts (stomach and intestines). I am unable to tell you specifics on costs for a veterinary visit, but I would recommend that you call the veterinarian's office and you can ask for their office call fee to get an estimate. You really need to get the infection examined by a vet if this is possible, because this could be a bacterial and not fungal infection. Ideally the lesion should be cultured. Antibiotics can be very dangerous for rabbits so it's really important to get the right diagnosis and the right medication before treating him.
