My baby bunnies have scabs. Are they fight wounds or skin infections?

First of all most mites cannot be seen with the naked eye or even with a magnifying glass as they are too small and too deep in the skin. from the picture it is impossible to know what might be causing these, it could be mites, fleas, allergies or fungal infection, in order to find out a skin test needs to be done by your vet.

Hello, I would recommend taking Bun Bun into a veterinarian to be examined. Recurring scabs may be a sign of a chronic infection with a bacteria called Pasteurella, which is a common problem in rabbits. Scabs could also be coming from a fungal infection, commonly called ringworm, that can be spread to people. Scabs could also come from herself scratching- a parasitic infection of mites or fleas may be causing her scratch excessively. Most of these problems can be treated fairly easily with a course of medications once they are properly diagnosed. If the scabs are coming from being attacked by her sister, she needs to live separately from her for her own safety. I hope this is helpful. If the wound will not heal or grows larger, then she should be physically examined by your veterinarian. A fungal culture would be needed to diagnose ringworm infection. If you see her licking or chewing, use an e-collar. Keep her nails trimmed to prevent trauma from excessive scratching. You can clean the area with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution daily. Dry thoroughly afterwards.

Even though a picture of the wound itself would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). An immediate check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Hello! This picture does look suspicious for vent disease or possibly ringworm. Vent disease is usually treated with Penicillin, but it doesn't look like it's gotten any better. It may not cured because of using too low of a dose, which can lead to antibiotic resistance and a more difficult infection to treat. This may require that a different antibiotic or a higher dose of the same one is used. If the infection is ringworm, which is another round skin lesion that commonly affects rabbit's faces and is contagious, it will only respond to anti-fungal medication, so antibiotics will not be useful. Ringworm can spread to people as well, but is fairly easily treated. Sometimes, skin mites can cause small lesions of baldness like this. We generally use puppy/kitten Revolution (flea product that also treats mites) on rabbits when we are suspicious of this. It is a very safe product, so an easy treatment to try. I would recommend a vet visit to be totally sure of what you're treating and what doses to use. I think that will get them the quickest recovery. I can't tell exactly from the picture where the scabs are, but if Akira has a wet or snotty nose or is sneezing he may have respiratory disease, and this is a cause for concern. He could be pawing at his nose trying to get rid of nasal discharge and causing the scratches. If not, and there is no snotty nose or sneezing, and he lives in a wire cage, he could be scraping it on that, or have a bacterial infection that needs looked at by a rabbit vet. Mites or some other kind of infection are a possibility as well.

Hello, and thank you for your question. The skin lesions may be due to a bacterial infection, fungal infection, parasites such as mites, or an ear infection. I am glad to hear you will be taking Charlie to the vet soon. They may recommend performing some tests such as an ear swab to check for infection, or a skin scraping or cytology. Based on the results, the appropriate treatment can be prescribed. For example, if an ear infection is confirmed, ear drops or oral antibiotics may be needed. If mites are found, then topical monthly drops will help to clear the parasites. In the meantime, keep their environment clean and remove soiled bedding daily. Also ensure they are eating a good quality diet consisting of mostly timothy, and a small amount of pellets, and leafy green veggies. I hope this helps, and that Charlie feels better soon!
