Rabbit ringworm: How to prevent spread & how long is it contagious?

I hate to hear that Boo has ringworm. The main problem with spreading is due to the spores of the fungus found in the environment. The spores are attached to pieces of shedding hair and can be active in the environment for months in ideal conditions. Environmental clean up is a must to control this fungus. As far as Boo himself goes, the topical treatments will help to remove the contagious spores faster and the oral medications will help to kill the fungus faster which will result in less spores. Unfortunately, Boo is considered contagious until he has two negative cultures done 1 week apart. Most cats will be start re-testing for ringworm 2-4 weeks after initial diagnosis. I don't find ringworm to be very contagious. Often litters of kittens all get it when they have been together all of the time. If Lucille and Maui were only together for a short time and Maui is healthy it should not spread. It may take several weeks for a new case of ringworm to show. The cream should start to heal the lesion quickly and reduce the likelihood that it will spread. You also can get ringworm so please wash your hands after handling the kittens. Cats with ringworm can remain contagious for about three weeks if aggressive treatment it used, which it sounds like you are doing. I would keep them isolated for at least another week. Keep in mind you will have to disinfect the environment as well because ringworm spores can live in it up to 18 months. Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If the fungal infection is ringworm, it can take weeks to months to fully resolve. Many times treating the environment as well as the cat is needed. Keep Mia indoors may make it easier to contain the infection and prevent reinfection. The vet can look at hairs under the microscope or try to culture the fungus from Mia to assess if she still has it. First of all, ringworm is highly contagious. If this is a classroom pet I strongly suggest you don't let any children handle Clover until this has cleared up. Ringworm can take months to completely clear but I would say the average is ~4-6 weeks. Number two, you need to be careful putting medications near an eye. Most topical medications are toxic to ocular tissues. If the medication gets in the eye you will end up with a worse problem. Ringworm is not deadly so I don't think you need to return him but you should consider getting him to a vet for an actual diagnosis. Right now you are just guessing that it is ringworm and while that is the most likely diagnosis it is not the only possibility. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Fungal infections are pretty tough to manage. If it seems to be lingering, the best way to get rid of it is to get everyone on an oral medication prescribed by your vet. With this many pets, this can get pricey, so ask your vet for an alternative medication that you can purchase from your local pharmacy (i.e. Terbinafine). I would still continue with a topical ointment as well for the most effective treatment of this fungal infection. Also its best to shave around the affected areas, since the fungal spores like to hang out in the haircoat and spread further this way.
