Is my rabbit pooping too much? What's healthy for a picky eater?

Review the diet to ensure proper nutrition. Offer timothy hay, oat hay or similar grasses in unlimited amounts, as much as they want to eat. About 1/8 cup of commercial pellets can be offered to each rabbit daily. 1-2 cups of fresh greens and vegetables can also be added to the diet. Clean the droppings out frequently, daily if necessary, to prevent them from eating "normal" stool. Provide a variety of toys, playtime and exercise to keep them engaged and distracted from their droppings.

It is not unusual for rabbits to defecate several times throughout the day - they are hind gut fermenters and therefore eat almost constantly, so they produce a lot of poop! As long as the feces is not soft/liquid, frequent passing of fecal balls is normal. If you are ever concerned that Khargi is sick or acting abnormal, Khargi should be evaluated by your veterinarian! You can always bring a fecal sample with you to the vet to be evaluated for any parasites. I hope this is helpful!

Pellets can predispose a rabbit to obesity. They may not provide the amount of fiber needed to maintain a healthy gut. You don't need to feed just produce. Ellie should be fed as much timothy hay, oat hay or similar grasses as she wants to eat. These grasses are relatively inexpensive. You can feed alfalfa until she is about 7 months old then discontinue feeding it. Supplement the diet with a cup or two of fresh, dark, leafy greens and vegetables daily. Up to 1/4 cup of commercial pellets can be offered daily.

This is a normal type of feces for rabbits to make and is normally consumed directly from the anus, which is why most owners do not see it. Most rabbits eat this feces based on their vitamin needs and it can vary day to day. I recommend feeding Stanley a diet of rabbit pellets, hay, and occasional fresh fruits and veggies. If Daisy is not eating properly then it would be normal for her to poop less. She may also not be drinking enough. You can try to offer some fresh lettuce and veggies. If Daisy still refuses to eat or does not eat properly you will need to take her to a veterinarian familiar with rabbit medicine for a check up of her mouth and teeth. Tooth problems (overgrowth or malocclusions) are common in rabbits as are tooth abscesses. The vet will want to to an x-ray of the head and assess the situation. If tooth correction is requires, it will have to be done under general anesthesia, if done properly.

Rabbits will produce two types of droppings, with one being softer which they will reingest to extract nutrients. If the soft stool persists or worsens or if Stanley stops eating, have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits.
