Why are my rabbits peeing so much? Is it their food or something else?

If Willy is drinking and yribating a lot I would be suspicious that there could be an issue in his urinary tract. For example an early kidney issue won't necessarily show up on bloods, or there could be an issue in the bladder itself such as infection, which is quite common. I would suggest trying to get a urine sample for your vet to test. If he is litter trained you can get special needs to help obtain a sample, or you could leave him on a non absorbent surface until he urinates. I wouldn't worry so much about the food as they should eat a fair bit of hay In a day.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It's amazing to hear Rusty is almost 15! If all the foods you mentioned are regular items in his diet, it is unlikely that any of them are a cause for the orange urine. Sometimes if urine is left out to oxidize in air (i.e. he peed on the floor instead of in the litter box), it can turn a reddish-orange colour. If Rusty is otherwise acting, eating, and pooping normally, I would keep an eye on him for now. If any of these behaviours change, I would recommend taking him to the vet. They can test his urine sample for any evidence of abnormal crystals or bacteria, and also assess the concentration of his urine to ensure his kidneys are functioning normally. His diet seems just fine. The only thing I would be cautious of is not to feed spinach too often, which it doesn't seem like you are doing since it is in rotation with other veggies. Spinach in large quantities can cause calcium crystals to form in the urine. I hope this helps, and that Rusty is happy and healthy!

If your bunny's urine is milky/cloudy, that means she has more calcium in her diet than her body can use. The underlying cause is consuming too much alfalfa hay or pellets. If you are feeding alfalfa hay or pellets I suggest you stop feeding that and switch to timothy or orchard grass hay (or a combination thereof). Hay should make up the majority of the diet and she should be getting very little pellets. Hello. What you are seeing are porphyrin pigments in the urine. This is perfectly normal & may come & go. Make sure his pelleted diet is fresh & appropriate for rabbits. Rabbits absolutely need hay & grasses to live well & should be available to Snow all day long. You can feed other green leafy plants such as broccoli, cabbage, chard, parsley, celery leaves, watercress, kale, endive & carrot & beet tops. Unspayed female rabbits are at a very high risk of cancer of the uterus, so I would be very worried about that as a possibility for the weight loss. The muddy urine could also be due to high calcium in her diet leading to calcium build-up in the urine. This can cause rabbits to have sludgy urine. It is important to get this checked right away. Your vet will try to empty out the bladder, increase the fluid intake, and get a better diet that is lower in calcium. I would suggest having her seen by your vet and discuss her diet, get a urine sample, and check out her uterus. Best of luck with Ms. Bunny.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Bunny urine usually oxidizes the longer it is exposed to air, so it is normal for it to turn a shade of orange-pink as in the photo. However, if you notice she is urinating in unusual spots, or if she is acting off or eating or pooping less, then I would recommend seeking veterinary attention. It may be related to a urinary tract infection, bladder stones or crystals. In the meantime, ensure that Rose drinks plenty of water which will keep her urinating and flushing out any infection or crystals out of her bladder. You can do this by providing her usual green leafy veggies soaked in water for a few minutes before giving them to her. I hope this helps, and that Rose is well!

Care sheets for rabbits are available on the internet. e.g. here https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/rabbits Briefly, water and hay (alfalfa or grass) should be always available. Commercial pellets should be offered at about 1/2 cup per day to an adult 2kg rabbit. With young rabbits (<6 months) there is no need to limit the pellets. A handful of leafy greens may be added 1-2 times daily. As to the urines, just keep the cage as clean as possible and replace the substrate when it gets wet. Regards
