My rabbit is sad, eating less hay, and pooping less. Is he depressed?

It could be the effects of heat that are doing this to Toby. However, I'm slightly concerned he's not eating or passing much faeces, rabbits are prone to a condition called gut stasis where their stomach stops working. It is very dangerous and progresses quickly. To be safe I would have him examined as soon as you can.

Your bunny was probably just used to eating the lettuce and is adjusting to his new diet. You did the right thing by offering him only the pellets and hay. This is what is most beneficial to him. Since his stools are normal I would not worry at this point. If he stops passing stools, stops eating, or if you suspect he is losing weight, then you should take him to the veterinarian to be checked out. I hope this helps. With this abrupt change in behavior I would be concerned that something is going on with Binky, like the early signs of an illness. Since he is still eating and drinking there is not much that can be done at this time. Ensure that Binky is still making stool. Also, watch him and his food intake very closely. However, if you notice that Julius is not eating, or has not defecated for over 24 hours, he may require veterinary attention.

A rabbit that is not eating is a potential veterinary emergency. Gut stasis can develop if he doesn't start eating soon. Have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits to diagnose illness or injury. Causes include dental disease, pain, stress, hairballs, GI obstruction, fecal impaction or a poor diet. Offer as much timothy hay or similar grasses as Keo wants to eat. The high fiber keeps his system moving. You can purchase a supplemental diet from Oxbow specifically for herbivores at your veterinary clinic or pet store. This special diet may stimulate his appetite.

Rabbits love to be naughty and eat things they shouldn't. Fortunately, they are usually pretty effective at chewing things up pretty well prior to swallowing them up. I don't think you need to rush off the vet or anything at this time. Just keep a close eye on Twitch, make sure he continues to eat and drink normally, and also make sure he is continuing to defecate normal amounts. If he goes off feed for more than 12 hours or stop defecating for a period of time similar to this, I would be worried that something is wrong. Rabbits who stop eating and going to the bathroom, even for short periods of time like that, can be very concerning and require immediate medical attention. You and Twitch are probably in the clear based on the small size of the fabric, but just continue to be vigilant in your monitoring.

The stress of the bath or whatever condition precipitated the vet last week may be responsible. Discontinue feeding pellets and vegetables and feed solely Timothy hay or similar grasses. Feed as much hay as Oliver wants to eat. Do not feed any alfalfa. Once his droppings return to normal, feed no more than 1/8 cup of pellets daily and gradually introduce small amounts of vegetables or dark, leafy greens. You can continue to offer as much timothy hay as he wants. Rabbits need a high fiber diet. If the symptoms persist or if he stops eating, have him rechecked by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits.
