How long to wait between new veggies for my rabbit & how many leaves?

At 12 week of age you can start to introduce vegetables (one at a time, quantities under 1/2 oz.). Same goes for her even though she is 16 weeks. Once she is 7-8 months or older you can add more gradually; make sure your rabbit can tolerate it so go slow. Once she is an adult (1- 5 years old) you should feed a minimum of 2 cups chopped vegetables per 6 lbs. body weight; always introduce vegetables and greens slowly to make sure your rabbit can tolerate them. Thanks for your question about your new pets! I would recommend finding out what they are being fed now so you don’t switch their food over too quickly. I recommend feeding young rabbits free choice alfalfa hay until 6-9 months old and then transitioning them to a grass based hay, such as Timothy. I also recommend 1-2 tablespoons of pellets per bunny per day until they are full grown. Again, alfalfa based until 6-9 months old and then transition to Timothy pellets. Once full grown, you can give 1 tablespoon per 5 lbs of rabbit. You can also offer greens on a daily basis, but start slowly so they don’t get diarrhea. Leaf lettuce, cilantro, radicchio, and parsley are good options. They don’t require any supplements but the non-fruit based Oxbow treats are a great choice. I don’t recommend feeding fruit to rabbits as it can upset their tummies. For decreasing stress, make sure they have a place to hide and that their environment is quiet for them while they are adjusting. Great questions! From weaning up to seven months of age, Lenny can have unlimited amounts of pellets and alfalfa hay. Since he can have this food in an unlimited amount, just make sure he has plenty of both at all times, replacing old food with fresh food at least once a day. Do not start introducing vegetables until he is three months of age. At that point in time, start introducing small amounts at a time. I hope this helps!

Glad to hear you have added a bunny to your family! They are definitely very rewarding pets to have and certainly have some of their own individual challenges. In terms of just general information, you'll want to make sure Nznz is getting an appropriate diet of leafy greens, timothy hay, occasional small amounts of alfalfa, and other fruits / vegetables. Rabbits have teeth that will continually grow throughout their life so they should ideally have something to chew on to keep them from growing inappropriately. Sometimes, they will require manual teeth trimming if they do not take care of this themselves. As far as when to keep him in and out of the cage, that will ultimately be a personal preference. If you intend to litterpan train him, I would wait until he is regularly using the litter box before allowing him to roam freely, just so he makes claim to a certain area. Rabbits are also very sensitive to stress, noise, and heat so make sure that she is in a cool, calm environment. Hope this helps!

It's best to just feed them grass, hay and pellets for baby rabbits until they are about three months old. After that, you can start feeding some greens, parsley and other fruits and vegetables. However, you do not want their diet to be more than 10% of these greens, fruits and vegetables. The diet should continue to be mostly grass and hay.

Thanks for your follow up questions about Julius. It sounds like there are a lot of unsuitable baby foods around that would not be good for Julius, so I am glad that you asked! Ideally, if you are going to feed a vegetable baby food, it should ONLY contain the vegetable and no additional sugar or dairy, and we don't want any sugary vegetables (i.e. carrots). Therefore, I would not recommend any that contain corn, sweet potato, milk, or carrots. This may limit your options to spinach or green beans. An alternative would be to grind up pellets (in a coffee grinder for example) and add water to them. This can then be syringe fed to Julius. This will provide more fiber than baby food, which may result in less GI upset than the baby food will. I hope that this answers your question, and please feel free to ask others if needed!

Commercial rabbit food from the shop is good, as is cucumber (more for moisture than food) and do not feed too many cabbage leaves. You can try to go to a park and get some grass (Smilee Greens should be near you). Make sure your rabbit has fresh water available at all times.
