Is it safe to give my sick rabbit multiple medications at once?

Hello. Rabbits are prey species, so their signs of illness can be more subtle than ours. Any change in appetite, activity, defecation or urination is cause to have Lucky seen by a veterinarian. While many medications are shared between human and veterinary medicine, it is illegal to practice veterinary medicine without a license. More importantly, here are some medications that can be fatal or have serious side effects in rabbits, so a knowledge of rabbit physiology is necessary.

Collect some dry grass outside. Unfortunately rabbits can get digestive problems, sometimes they also can have hair balls which cause problems. Without a hands-on exam it is not possible to recommend a medication. Do not give any antibiotics to your rabbit or any other human medicine. Oral antibiotics are likely to kill the bacteria a rabbit needs for digestion and she will die. Try to find some hay, dry grass. Maybe there is a veterinarian in the next town who can help you.

The active ingredient, simethicone, has been used in rabbits safely. Excess gas can be caused by gut stasis which is very serious if left untreated. The underlying cause of the "wind pain" should be diagnosed and treated if possible. its a little hard to know the answer to your question because I don't know the concentration of the cisapride. This medication is compounded, so the concentration (the milligrams(mg) of drug in a cc ) can vary. The typical recommended dose for cisapride in rabbits is 0.5mg/kg every 6-12 hours. If your bunny weights 2.5 pounds, that is just over 1kg, so a recommended dose would be about 0.5mg. As long as you don't exceed 2mg in a 24 hour period, I don't think you need to worry. A sterile urine sample should be collected and submitted for urinalysis and culture. This will diagnose urinary tract infection, identify the responsible organism and determine the best antibiotic to use in treatment. Check the teeth for malocclusion or overgrowth. It is of critical importance to get Lilly eating again. Supportive care (subcutaneous fluids, force feeding, etc) should be continued. Always have timothy hay or similar grasses available. An abdominal x-rays should be considered to diagnose foreign body, large hair balls or tumors in the abdomen. A hairball paste may aid in passage of any hairballs.
