When I go to pick Patch up he makes this grunting noise, does this mean he doesn't want to be picked up??

He would likely struggle or flee if he didn't want to be picked up. He may simply be grunting when you place a hand under his belly. Support his rear end his chest when lifting him. Prevent him from kicking his back legs out which could injure his back/spine.
