Why does my rabbit have a green rash near its mouth from wet fur?

Thanks for reaching out about Thumper and including photos. By the description and swelling on the right side of the face, a dental abscess is highly suspicious. The dental disease is making it difficult for Thumper to eat, therefore loosing weight. A veterinary visit is recommended, the sooner the better. Rarely do antibiotics solve this problem, might requiring some surgery or tooth extraction. Good luck.

It's hard to tell from photo, but that looks like some superficial skin hanging down from the surface of the jawline. If this is the case, there is likely an open wound. The skin that is hanging either needs to be trimmed off or it needs to be sutured back into place. This should be done by a professional to ensure the best outcome, and to allow you to obtain oral antibiotics and pain medication. When rabbits aren't feeling well, they can often stop eating which is a recipe for disaster unfortunately. I would have Totoro checked out some time soon to be examined.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Donut. It appears that she may have some dermatitis (inflammation of her chin) and resulting infection. With chin dermatitis, oftentimes it is caused by drooling from some form of dental disease. It would probably be warranted for your veterinarian to take a good look at the teeth under anesthesia/sedation. Most likely regardless of the cause there is a bacterial infection occurring now. I would recommend culturing the lesion. If antibiotics are indicated, many pharmacies do flavoring which can really help with oral compliance. Also, I would try to keep the lesion dry with an astringent or manually just keeping the area dry with a clean cloth. Overall a good exam and history (any new changes in bedding, food area, detergents, caging), with some other diagnostics if possible including x-rays, blood work and oral exam will probably be helpful toward determining the underlying cause. This could be very easy to treat especially if due to misalignment of her teeth. Good luck with Donut.

A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. The sooner the visit, the better the prognosis. Try and provide water via a syringe for now. Good luck.

This is most likely Scabies (a mite infestation), this can become much more severe than that, i recommend taking him to the vet ASAP, he will need an injection of ivermectin (3 times one week apart), this should resolve the problem within 2-4 weeks.

Sulfur dips are a fairly good treatment for fungal infections but care must be made around the face. Moist dermatitis around the face from drooling is more likely a staphylococcus or pseudomonas infection, but curing the drooling should correct the skin problems. A veterinarian needs to inspect the cheek teeth for points. Try to dry the lesion and prevent getting wet. A diagnosis should be confirmed prior to treating with anti-fungals as they can cause severe gastrointestinal upset if ingested. Good luck.

Hello! This picture does look suspicious for vent disease or possibly ringworm. Vent disease is usually treated with Penicillin, but it doesn't look like it's gotten any better. It may not cured because of using too low of a dose, which can lead to antibiotic resistance and a more difficult infection to treat. This may require that a different antibiotic or a higher dose of the same one is used. If the infection is ringworm, which is another round skin lesion that commonly affects rabbit's faces and is contagious, it will only respond to anti-fungal medication, so antibiotics will not be useful. Ringworm can spread to people as well, but is fairly easily treated. Sometimes, skin mites can cause small lesions of baldness like this. We generally use puppy/kitten Revolution (flea product that also treats mites) on rabbits when we are suspicious of this. It is a very safe product, so an easy treatment to try. I would recommend a vet visit to be totally sure of what you're treating and what doses to use. I think that will get them the quickest recovery.
