Why does my bunny have mouth scabs and look sick? What should I do?

Thanks for reaching out about Thumper and including photos. By the description and swelling on the right side of the face, a dental abscess is highly suspicious. The dental disease is making it difficult for Thumper to eat, therefore loosing weight. A veterinary visit is recommended, the sooner the better. Rarely do antibiotics solve this problem, might requiring some surgery or tooth extraction. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Bob and including photos. This does appear to be an infection, which could be bacterial, fungal or yeast. Did the veterinarian look into the mouth with an instrument (ototoscope) to visual cheek teeth? Moist dermatitis can be green with a bacterial infection called Pseudomonas, which can be difficult to treat. Try to train and switch to a water bottle. Maybe decrease vegetables. A new veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.

This is most likely Scabies (a mite infestation), this can become much more severe than that, i recommend taking him to the vet ASAP, he will need an injection of ivermectin (3 times one week apart), this should resolve the problem within 2-4 weeks.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It looks like Pluffy has some sort of skin infection. One possibility is rabbit syphilis (treponema), which is a type of bacterial infection. Another possibility is a systemic infection (sepsis). I would highly recommend taking Pluffy to the vet within the next 24 hours. They can administer antibiotics and pain medication to heal the infection. In the meantime, encourage her to eat a more balanced diet which includes plenty of timothy hay, and limited pellets (no more than 1/4 cup a day). Keep her environment clean. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Donut. It appears that she may have some dermatitis (inflammation of her chin) and resulting infection. With chin dermatitis, oftentimes it is caused by drooling from some form of dental disease. It would probably be warranted for your veterinarian to take a good look at the teeth under anesthesia/sedation. Most likely regardless of the cause there is a bacterial infection occurring now. I would recommend culturing the lesion. If antibiotics are indicated, many pharmacies do flavoring which can really help with oral compliance. Also, I would try to keep the lesion dry with an astringent or manually just keeping the area dry with a clean cloth. Overall a good exam and history (any new changes in bedding, food area, detergents, caging), with some other diagnostics if possible including x-rays, blood work and oral exam will probably be helpful toward determining the underlying cause. This could be very easy to treat especially if due to misalignment of her teeth. Good luck with Donut.

Hello! This picture does look suspicious for vent disease or possibly ringworm. Vent disease is usually treated with Penicillin, but it doesn't look like it's gotten any better. It may not cured because of using too low of a dose, which can lead to antibiotic resistance and a more difficult infection to treat. This may require that a different antibiotic or a higher dose of the same one is used. If the infection is ringworm, which is another round skin lesion that commonly affects rabbit's faces and is contagious, it will only respond to anti-fungal medication, so antibiotics will not be useful. Ringworm can spread to people as well, but is fairly easily treated. Sometimes, skin mites can cause small lesions of baldness like this. We generally use puppy/kitten Revolution (flea product that also treats mites) on rabbits when we are suspicious of this. It is a very safe product, so an easy treatment to try. I would recommend a vet visit to be totally sure of what you're treating and what doses to use. I think that will get them the quickest recovery. Hello, I would recommend taking Bun Bun into a veterinarian to be examined. Recurring scabs may be a sign of a chronic infection with a bacteria called Pasteurella, which is a common problem in rabbits. Scabs could also be coming from a fungal infection, commonly called ringworm, that can be spread to people. Scabs could also come from herself scratching- a parasitic infection of mites or fleas may be causing her scratch excessively. Most of these problems can be treated fairly easily with a course of medications once they are properly diagnosed. If the scabs are coming from being attacked by her sister, she needs to live separately from her for her own safety. I hope this is helpful.
