Why is my rabbit's eye closed and ear down? What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Hello my name is Laura. My rabbit Shila has recently been acting strange. Her right eye is closed and her left ear is down (they are usually straight up.) I let her outside in the yard this morning hoping she just needed to be outside and it didnt help much. She is fed hay whenever she is inside, pellets at night, and grass all the time. She is usually outside because she is used to being outside all the time eating grass. I clean her cage everyday and I change her water frequently.

Thanks for reaching out about Shila. There is suspect that trauma or infection is affecting the eye. Try gently wiping with a warm wetted washcloth to determine if any thick white discharge is noted. This is an infection. Since rabbit eyes are large and situated laterally on the head, it is not uncommon that the eyes become scratched or worse while sticking their heads into bushes, etc. Any chance of a predator (cat, other) encounter? A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. They should be able to examine the eye and present a treatment plan.
Good luck.
