My rabbit keeps biting and lifting her litter box. How do I stop her?

I'm trying to train my rabbit to go to the bathroom in a potty in the corner of her cage. but, its plastic and she keeps biting on it and trying to lift it up. how do I prevent that?

Wounded Warrior is a very cute rabbit! I am not sure if it is because of the angle of the picture, but the litter box looks like it may be a bit small for your rabbit. Ideally the box should be big enough so that two rabbits of Wounded Warrior's size could fit inside of it. That may help provide some extra weight to discourage your rabbit from trying to pick up the box, and will also give her enough space to hop into the box and turn around. Also, some brands will also have a way to secure the litter box to the side of the cage, which may also help.
One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes rabbits will decide to lay/relax in their litter box - for these rabbits, we often will recommend having two available. One for bathroom use, and one for relaxation.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is important to remember that rabbits are naturally a prey species, so they are pretty timid and can be defensive. I recommend moving slowly with Bun Bun to let her realize that you are not a threat. You should start by petting her first between the ears and then gradually moving towards her neck and back. It may take some time for her to trust you enough to let you pick her up. Unfortunately, some rabbits never like being lifted, so you should be careful to support her back end to prevent her from hurting her back. I hope this helps!

My rabbit stopped using her litter box. Is she sick or stressed?

Any change in behavior may be due to illness or injury. It may also be due to the stress of not having her owner around. Place an additional litter box in that corner. Pellets can be picked up and put in the box to remind Anne where she should be eliminating. Monitor her. If she stops eating or drinking, have her seen by her veterinarian right away.

Thanks for reaching out about Theo. Intact males often become less handleable. , especially at an age where their testosterone levels are on the rise. When a rabbit feels safe when restrained, they will often fight less. Well supported underneath the body and gently grasping the rear legs should do fine. Lifting them high off the ground is pretty scary so only lifting several inches, while your sitting on the ground might help. Litter training should occur at this time also. If he has selected a potty area, try placing the litter pan there, with some veggies or hay inside to encourage him to enter. Once he starts using it as a toilet, you can gradually move the pan to the area you want. Good luck.

How can I successfully potty train my free-roaming house bunny?

Determine where Fluffy is eliminating most often then place a litterbox on that spot. Place a few others in the vicinity. If she urinates or defecates outside the box, scoop up the pellets and place them in the preferred box. A tissue can be used to soak up urine which can then be placed in the preferred box as well. When she begins to use one box regularly, gradually remove the other boxes over several weeks.

If she will allow, check her teeth for overgrowth or malocclusion. You may need to have her examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits if she won't let you. The vet can also check the back teeth to see if they need grinding. Sometimes, they can wear unevenly causing uncomfortable points. She may also be bored or stressed. Provide ample playtime outside of the cage and provide a variety of toys to keep her engaged while in the cage.

My rabbit holds pee, then goes outside. How to litter train?

It sounds like your bunny is quite tidy and doesn't want to soil her cage. She will probably be easy to litter train, and then you will have somewhere in the cage for her to go. Make sure her cage is large enough that she has plenty of room to move around in, and so that her litter tray isn't near her food or water. You can use hay as a litter. To start training her, place her tray where she likes to go when she gets out of the cage. Put some of her poo and urine in the tray so that she knows that is where she needs to go. Once she is consistently using this tray, then move it into the cage. If she stops using it once in the cage, you might need to get her a bigger cage.
