My rabbit ate modeling clay. Is it harmful, and what should I do?

I am sorry to hear about Sophie! Hopefully she chewed it up a bit before swallowing. If it was small and chewed it should not cause any harm and will pass through the digestive tract. Our main concern with an ingestion like this would be a blockage in the intestines. I would monitor her for the next few days to be sure she is eating normally and having normal bowel movements. If you notice her having any decreases in appetite/feces produced I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian.

Hello. Fortunately, there is nothing toxic in this product. However, there is a very small chance that this could lead to an intestinal blockage, if he ate any at all. I would go ahead & take a slice of bread, & apply a good layer of Vaseline to it. Feed Hikaru a piece at a time, allowing him to eat as much as he likes up to the whole piece of bread. The Vaseline will not be actually absorbed, but will coat any possible pieces of the clay helping things to pass through smoothly. The clay will possibly soften with the moisture in the gut & the warmer body temperature, too. You should see a softer stool in about 12-18 hours & may last for a day or so, but there should be no abdominal discomfort or vomiting. If you do see more than 1 episode of vomiting, or you think there is any abdominal pain or bloating, please see your veterinarian immediately. A larger concern would be whether or not you need to be concerned about a potential gastrointestinal obstruction occurring. I would not give her any additional hay, but if you are noting normal appetite, drinking, and bathroom habits this is definitely a great sign. Your choices would be the following at this point: continue to monitor at home for any changes in normal, or take her to the vet where they can administer some fluids / keep her overnight for monitoring. Yes this could be causing gastrointestinal obstruction and/or possibly gastrointestinal inflammation. I would suggest to closely monitor defecation and appetite in the next 3-4 days and if you notice any variation (inappetence, diarrhoea or no defecation at all), to have LILO checked as soon as possible by your local veterinarian.

It's really difficult to know without evaluating her. This can definitely get stuck in the stomach or intestines and make her very sick. If she's less active and/or eating less, then it's best to have a vet evaluated her as soon as possible. I hope that helps and she gets better soon.

Of course, this cannot be confirmed 100% without a physical exam. Monitor for a decrease or loss of appetite, a decrease or absence of stool production and lethargy. These symptoms should be addressed immediately by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits. Increase the amount of timothy hay being offered as well as the amount of exercise.
