My Zebra finch has heat stroke. What can I do without a vet?

Weakness can have multiple causes, with infections being only one possibility. Provide heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some support. Finches eat primarily seed but also need a vitamin/mineral/protein support in the form of a wide variety of vegetables. Provide a soft bedding/towels on the bottom of the cage to protect if falls. It sounds as if your female may be sick and it would be best to bring her to a vet ASAP. It is possible she is exhausted from laying the eggs due to malnutrition, has an illness, or even has a stuck egg that is making her ill. Seeking veterinary care in person ASAP is best to try and get her feeling better. You may also need to separate her into a warm hospital cage until you can get to the vet to help make her more comfortable and reduce stress.

The best thing you can do is prevention. Try to have access to cool water and shade at all times. Cats are much more resourceful at Finding cool areas and rarely have heat stroke, but they can. Unfortunately if a feral cat can not receive veterinary care then all you can do is provide a cool environment. As long as he/she is eating, drinking and behaving normally otherwise, there is no cause for concern. Given time, the behavior will go back to normal. You can help by decreasing exposure to daylight and by lowering room temperature a few degrees.

Reach out to the local humane society or animal rescue, as they sometimes have connections that assist people with veterinary bills. Contact your local vet and ask if something can be worked out.
