How to store Oxbow Critical Care: unopened, opened, or refrigerated?

Thanks for reaching out about Fluffy. Oxbow Critical Care is basically, mulched hay, with added nutrients. The high fiber content is important for the health of the intestinal tract. It being mulched, allows less energy needed to masticate prior to ingestion. Added vitamins and other nutrients will help sick/ill animals in recovery. Good luck.

If you keep the tin in the fridge then spoilage is slowed, ie the important nutritional ingredients will not change and the full nutritional value of the food will be retained. You should, however take the food out of the fridge and let it warm up or put it into the microwave for a few seconds, to get it to room temperature to avoid gastro-intestinal problems in your kitty,

Dry commercial dog foods are shelf stable and do not require refrigeration or freezing for storage. Store any open food in a food-grade container that seals well at room temperature. Be sure to use all food before the expiration date printed on the bag.

This is from the manufacturer's website with regards to storing Eprex: Store at 2°C to 8°C. Do not freeze or shake. This temperature range should be closely maintained until administration to the patient. Store in original package in order to protect from light. When the product is about to be used, it may be removed from the refrigerator and stored at room temperature (below 25°C) for a maximum single period of seven days. So, if you keep it refrigerated at 2-8C even after opened, it should be OK to use. You could always call the manufacturer (phone number should be on the packaging) to get better council.

Anytime you open a wet food I would put the open portion in the fridge. I would recommend covering the food with either a lid (you can get them at the pet store) or plastic wrap. I usually throw all wet food away on the 4th day of it being open. If they don't like the cold food, you can heat in a little bit in he microwave. Just make sure it isn't too hot. I wouldn't worry about it one time if it was in a cool spot as long as Noushmc isn't having any vomiting or diarrhea. Hi, with gut stasis we prefer to give Intravenous fluids in forms of boluses or by continuous infusion, even when they are taking the critical care formula by mouth. However, your vet has probably considered risks and benefits of having Nemo at the hospital and decided it was better for him to have treatment at home. As you can imagine, it can be stressful to be in an environment with other pets, especially if the hospital does not have an exotic ward. I also prefer to give their first medications intravenously as I find they are more effective. See how Nemo gets on today, if he starts eating on his own a bit and passing any droppings, if he doesn’t I would have him rechecked. Depending on his weight, Nemo could have a couple more meals of recovery per day, perhaps you could do 10mls every 4 hours. We prefer to give smaller amounts more frequently, as we find it more effective in promoting gut motility. Hope this helps !

Look for Oxbow Critical Care for Herbivores. Your veterinarian may stock it or you may be able to find it online. If Fluffy is not eating at all, this should be considered a veterinary emergency. Have her physically examined by your veterinarian, a vet experienced in treating rabbits or at the nearest veterinary ER. It is critical to get her eating normally to keep her gut moving. Gut stasis can be life threatening in rabbits.
