My pet mouse has a tumor but is active and happy. What can I do?

Hello and welcome back. If Hazel is running around and eating and is happy, you can ignore the tumor. At some point it will cause her distress and discomfort, at which point you will have to make the hard choice to put her to sleep, but if she is happy now then you can wait. Ideally the tumor would be removed, but if that is not possible I wouldn't recommend euthanasia if she happy and eating and acting normally. In terms of time-line, there is no way to say. some cancers grow very slowly and some grow quickly, so we cannot know how long it will be until the tumor affects Hazel. Best of luck with her.

I would recommend having Peachy examined by a vet. Mice can develop tumors just like humans, and with the small size of their body, it can be some obviously large very quickly. A vet will do an exam and determine if this is the case. If it is, they can discuss treatment options and help you watch out for signs of decreasing quality of life.

Poor Toot. It sounds that she is not very well at the moment. Decision on euthanasia is very hard but animal's walfare must always come first. Assessing walfare in small pet, like Toot may not be straight forward. Weight loss and poor coat are often signs of ageing in mice but it is not necessary a sign of suffering. Signs of high concerns in older mice are poor appetite, lethargy, weakness, often problems with breathing or walking. In my opionion, you should take Toot to your local vet for a check. Some abdominal or skin tumors can be found during clinical examination, which can direct further decisions. Your vet will be able to help you to establish if your little mouse has still good quality of life or not.

Poor Mac, sorry to hear he has got a tumour. Two and half years old is a very good age for an hamster, and he is lucky to have made it until then ! I totally understand your point of view, as I had an hamster myself. However we need to consider things in view of his age and the fact that he will probably not tolerate a big op, so I would personally continue to spoil him and love him without causing any suffering until he is having a good quality of life and he is pain free. Unfortunately besides surgery, there is nothing you can do but monitor her quality of life. If Saphira reaches a point where she isn't eating or drinking, or has trouble moving, is losing weight, and/or is lethargic, I'd consider letting her go peacefully with the vet.

Thanks for your question about Tiny, and thank you for the photos - they are very helpful. Based on the location on the mass, and how fast it has come on, I would be concerned that it could be an infection, or potentially a tumor. I would recommend taking Tiny into a veterinarian. They can perform an examination, and can put a needle into the mass, remove some cells, and put the cells under the microscope for evaluation. Depending on what they find, they may have medications that they can prescribe (for example, antibiotics if it is an infection). Please don’t give any human medications to Tiny, as many of them are harmful to our furry friends. I hope that gives you a place to start, and that Tiny feels better soon.
