Why do mice escape their cages, and how can I keep mine safe?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would definitely avoid any product that says it is not animal safe. Mice are fastidious groomers, & will consume anything left on their bodies. You must clean the cage & replace any bedding that is soiled immediately to control odors. If the cage is clean, the mice will not smell too bad. If the cage granules indicate they can be used with mice, then by all means use it. Otherwise, use a rodent friendly substrate to keep your mice happy & healthy. Take care.

I do need a little more information to give you a better idea about what is going on - were there any signs prior to death? Some mice carry bacteria and viruses that do not necessarily make them sick, but can be transmitted to other mice and be harmful. yes, mice can make good pets if you handle them enough. They need their cage cleaned once a week. Rats can also make very engaging pets. Thanks for reaching out about your birds. Quite the dilemna. The answer really depends on the size of the cage, on how long they can be left in it. Out of cage exercise is important for health, just as exercise for humans. Could you limit to the one room? Good luck.

I would recommend getting a different cage or one that requires two fingers to engage a spring. Dogs are unable to open the cages that have the springs in my experience. These are similar to cat carriers that have the spring loaded mechanism on the door. I hope this helps! The carrier is just meant for transport but they could stay in there for 6 hours or so. The cage is where these guys should live. Make sure they have a small wheel to run in (as mice LOVE these) and you can purchase one of the clear plastic balls that they can run in on the ground. Mice can't really be house broken unfortunately. At least clean up is small. Please post again if you have any further questions!

I recommend separating the male as soon as you are sure that the female is pregnant, because females can get pregnant again very shortly after giving birth. It is important to keep the pups quiet and calm, to prevent the mother from eating them when stressed. You should also not touch the pups until they are about 14 days old. There are several types of nesting material available in pet stores, or you could use pieces of paperCut up into small strips. The pups should be separated from their mother when they are about 14 to 21 days old. At this point they should be able to eat normal adult mouse food.
