Why is my male rat's pee suddenly smelling extremely strong?

Thanks for reaching out about Lemon and including a photo. Sugar gliders, especially males, commonly scent-mark territory. This is a system of communication. Castrating the male could reduce the testosterone-driven odor and scent-marking, but might not eliminate. Using cleansers could confuse your pets resulting in aggression. Castration is your best bet. The smell can be unpleasant but you cannot catch anything from breathing only, most rats do not carry disease although because this one was found outside i would be more careful, try to avoid touching him and wash your hands after you clean his cage or after you do touch him.

It is, unfortunately, very common for male rats to begin fighting as they get closer to sexual maturity. Your rats are getting to be that age, so that may be contributing to the scuffling that you are seeing. There are a few things that you can try - one is to completely separate them from one another. This can be complicated as you will need to have three separate enclosures. Sometimes there is only one aggressor - if you know that one of the rats is the bully (usually the one that has no injuries), you can also try to separate that one and leave the other two together. Unfortunately, sometimes this can then lead to the other two fighting (so it doesn't always work). Another alternative is to get them castrated. I am not sure what the comfort level of the veterinarians in your area is with rats, but this would remove the hormone component of things. Thanks for reaching out about Dobby. Sexual maturity, competition and dominance are all controlled by testosterone levels. Castration is a fairly simple procedure (for a veterinarian with rodent experience) and will likely have a calming effect. Not all castrated males calm down though, but the earlier in the maturation process, the better the outcome. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Puck. Strong odors are not normal in neutered/de-scented ferrets. Young ferrets are also unlikely to have adrenal tumors that can cause odors. Concerns wound be around an infected scent gland, urinary tract infection or other endocrine problem. A veterinary visit is recommended to assist in diagnostic and treatment plans. Good luck.

It sounds like your rat may have had some trauma to his penis or he may have a urinary tract infection. If he is housed with other rats I would recommend separating him for the time being. I would also recommend taking him to the vet to be checked out. If he does have a urinary tract infection he will need to antibiotics to help clear it up. Your vet can also prescribe some pain medication for him.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! Sometimes more concentrated urine can have a stronger odor. I would make sure he is drinking plenty of water and not dehydrating himself. If he has been drinking adequate amounts of water and if the smell continues, I would get him examined by his veterinarian and have his urine tested as he may be dealing with a urinary tract infection.
