My hamster's testicle is swollen and blue/purple. What's wrong?

Depending on how old Titus is, the reason for one testicle being larger than the other might be different. I would say that it would be in your best interest to have him examined for evidence of either a testicular infection or a possible testicular tumor. If there is a tumor, neutering might be curative. If there is an infection, the use of antibiotics would be beneficial and possibly curative. Hope this helps.

Thanks for reaching out about your hamster and including pictures. In the pictures the testicles appear large but symmetrical. If you feel they are continuing to swell, seem painful, discolor or other problems, a veterinary visit is recommended. For now observe appetite and activity. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out. Could this be a bite wound from the other hamster? The dark skin is probably necrotic (dead) dermis. It could be an abscess. Infections should be treated with systemic antibiotics and possible anti-inflammatories/analgesia, as it could be painful. A veterinary visit is recommended, as only a veterinarian can prescribe antibiotics. Good luck.

That is extremely swollen! I suggest you try to ice that area (scrotum) for five minutes three times per day. But, if does not get less swollen in a couple days then you need to get him to a vet ASAP. Really, he should see vet now. That really does not look like swelling due to trauma to me...

I am not sure how warm it has become in your house, but I think that what you have done is a good place to start. Hamsters are most comfortable when housed between 65-75F, so if it was warmer than this, it can cause them to not want to burrow. Since you also feel like his testicles may be more swollen, I would recommend watching these closely for changes. They may be hanging lower and appear larger due to the heat, but once you have cooled the temperature in your house, they should go back to a normal position. If they continue to appear swollen, or if the activity levels continue to be abnormal, I would recommend having Ralphie evaluated by a veterinarian. It sounds like either a bloat or an internal tumor, in both cases it's very bad news for her as 'hamsters usually do not recover from these conditions. you need to take her to the vet in order to have it checked ASAP.
