My hamster was caught in a rat trap. How to help an injured pet?

Hi there, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Hamsters are very good at squirming out of our grasp, and can easily end up on the floor. Luckily, they usually are not much worse for the wear, as long as they don't hit anything on the way down. If Rosie is walking around and acting normally (eating and drinking, not limping or squeaking), she's probably fine. If anything changes, a vet visit is in order. Hopefully he will be fine. However, limping could indicate a leg injury. Lethargy and decreased appetite could indicate internal damage/ or bleeding. You can try some mineral oil or coconut oil to see if that will help get the glue from her fur. She is likely exhausted from trying to get off the glue trap. If she doesn't start perking up in the next day or two or if she is refusing to eat (especially her favorite treats) then I would have your vet take a look at her. You vet will be able to make sure everything looks okay and prescribe her any pain meds if needed. I hope this helps!

Thanks for reaching out about Amber. A sprain or strain should heal well with some cage rest, but a fracture or other injury is better managed through a veterinary visit. If you have a chance to handle Amber, try touching the leg to determine how painful it it. Even a sprain could respond better with analgesic medications. Good luck.

She may be painful and dehydrated and undernourished. An immediate check up at your local vet is required to have a better clinical picture and treat appropriately. Pain relief meds and eventually antibiotics (if there is any sign of infection) are possibly required. Poor Fustuq! He really needs to be seen by a vet to determine the extent of his injury, especially since he is breathing weird and not moving. There isn't much you can do at home except keep him quiet, warm, and try to get him to eat and drink.
