What's this brown spot on my hamster's stomach? Scent gland or tumor?

I am so very sorry to hear of your concern for Snoopy. It is difficult for us to say without being able to palpate/feel the area. A tumor or cancer is possible but we could also possibly have an abscess or wound here- if he had somehow injured himself on his cage or if he is with another hamster who injured him. I think it is worth bringing Snoopy to a vet if you are able for an exam.

Hello. You are looking at the normal scent glands found on all hamsters. Nothing to worry about. If Gert continues to be lethargic, or develops any sneezing, coughing, or wheezing, then I would be concerned about a respiratory infection & he should see a veterinarian. Hamsters can get papillomas (warts) or cancerous masses as well as skin infections. While removal is likely to be one of the best options, you should try to keep the area as clean as possible and look out for any bleeding or ulceration of the growth. Thanks for reaching out about Stripe. Can you describe the spot and location? Hamsters possess two dark spots along the lumbar (lower) back area that are just off center. The should be evenly spaced, one on each side. These are scent glands. Other spots should be assessed by a veterinarian. Good luck.

That looks like a wound of some type. Maybe from another hamster or a toy or bar in the cage? There could also be a small mass or cyst that's open. Keep that area clean and have a vet check that out in case he needs antibiotics.

This is most likely a tumor, which are common in hamsters. it's usually possible to remove such a tumor surgically but of course the risks of anesthesia in hamsters are quite high. price wise this could range between 300-500$.

Thanks for reaching out. Could this be a bite wound from the other hamster? The dark skin is probably necrotic (dead) dermis. It could be an abscess. Infections should be treated with systemic antibiotics and possible anti-inflammatories/analgesia, as it could be painful. A veterinary visit is recommended, as only a veterinarian can prescribe antibiotics. Good luck.
