My hamster is bloated and lethargic. Should I take her to the vet?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | 0.27 lbs

My adult female syrian hamster has been looking bloated around the sides of the abdomen for the past week or so. She has been less energetic, slower and her ears aren't perked up like usual. She is still eating, drinking and going to the toilet as usual, but doesn't seem herself. Her feet are looking quite worn right now, too. What can I do to help her? Can you give me some advice, and is it vital that I see a vet as I can't afford to be paying hefty vets bills

Thanks for reaching out about Lucy and including photos. If she is lethargic and bloated she probably still needs to see a veterinarian to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Gas distention, abdominal fluid due liver or kidney problems need to be considered. Hopefully is not something serious and expensive. Continue to monitor food intake and defecation.

Female hamsters can also have reproductive problems (uterine neoplasia, pyometras and more. Urinary problems can also cause similar clinical signs. Your local veterinarian should be contacted again, as diagnostic tests might need to be performed to achieve a diagnosis. Try not to give mineral oil or yogurt again, as this can cause serious gastrointestinal upset. Good luck.

Why is my hamster's belly suddenly big and she's gaining weight?

Abdominal size increases can be caused by fluid build up called ascites (liver, renal, heart diseases) or an organ enlargement. Kidney enlargement due to polycystic renal disease or cancer is not unusual in hamsters. A veterinary visit is recommended for diagnosis and treatment, quality of life can be improved. Good luck.

My hamster is lethargic, tired, and dragging her legs. Is she sick?

She may not be dying, but she looks and is behaving as if she is seriously ill. You'll need to have Latte physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose illness or injury though. In the tank, clean and sanitize her cage, bowls, toys and hides. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Keep her warm and as stress free as possible until she sees the vet. Offer small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte and moisten pelleted food to make eating easier.

It sounds like either a bloat or an internal tumor, in both cases it's very bad news for her as 'hamsters usually do not recover from these conditions. you need to take her to the vet in order to have it checked ASAP.
