My hamster's back legs are limp. Is it a spine injury or treatable?

My hamster was running in her wheel all night and seemed to be vigorous and healthy. He (I think) even carried bedding and food up to his wheel and made a bed. This afternoon I went to take him out for a bit but he didn't move when I opened the cage and when I picked him up I realized his back legs were totally limp. I know she should go to a vet right away but I have no money for a 2 weeks. Could he have an injured spine even though he was running around or could it be something more treatable?

Spinal injury is possible especially if Nefarix cannot move his hindlimbs. Hopefully, he is experiencing weakness and not paralysis. Take the wheel out of his cage so he can rest. Monitor his ability to urinate and defecate. If he cannot urinate or defecate, you must get him to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Poor chip. It is hard to say what is causing the abnormal activity with out examining him. I would recommend taking him to a vet for a good exam to determine if he has a fracture or soft tissue injury. The vet can provide pain control which will keep him more comfortable. hope that helps

Thanks for reaching out about Amber. A sprain or strain should heal well with some cage rest, but a fracture or other injury is better managed through a veterinary visit. If you have a chance to handle Amber, try touching the leg to determine how painful it it. Even a sprain could respond better with analgesic medications. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about Flash. If you believe his leg might be fractures, you should probably be seen by a veterinarian, as broken legs or back can be very painful and possibly life threatening. I would remove the wheel for now in hopes of preventing further damage to the leg/back.

You should leave him for 30-60 minutes and do not interfere with him. If it was only a minor injury, it should get better within about 1hr. If after that time Timber is still limping or looking in pain, you will have to take him to your local vets to find out what has happened to his leg.
