Is my guinea pig's sudden jumping normal, or could it be seizures?

I think what you are describing is “popcorning” which is a normal behavior guinea pigs do when they are excited. They will bounce or pop up and down quickly. It sounds like Hershey is just having fun and enjoying himself!

Is is possible that Jordan is just playing around in his cage with this behavior. However, I would recommend checking his skin very closely to make sure he does not have any types of skin mites or lice. If you see any scabs or abnormal regions on his skin I would recommend taking him to a vet to have it examined

In a neonatal guinea pig that is having seizures I would be concerned about hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). She is probably not nursing well or not getting enough when she does nurse. I would recommend rubbing a small amount of karo syrup on her gums to help bring her blood sugar level up to an acceptable level. Then, monitor her carefully with her mother. Make sure the mother is allowing her to nurse. If she is not spending enough time nursing or is not able to nurse you may have to bottle feed her. Guinea pigs can drink cows milk or a puppy milk replacer. Guinea pigs can also start eating at about 5 days old so you can try to offer her a pelleted guinea pig food soaked in water and see if she can eat that. If she is eating/nursing well and still having seizures then you should probably take her to your veterinarian to be examined. I hope this helps. I'm so sorry that Cam is sick. I sincerely apologize that no one has responded to your question and it has been 4 days. I hope he has survived. Some things that could cause those signs are nutritional deficiency (like vitamin C), liver shunt, ear infection, head trauma, and even parasites (like mites). What you are describing almost sounds like seizures. True seizures are rare in guinea pigs although possible. If your guinea pig cries out, falls to one side, and starts twitching, it is most likely infected with a skin parasite known as guinea pig mange (Trixicara cavis). The seizure-like behavior is due to the intense itching sensation caused by the mites burrowing through the skin. The mites are microscopic and you would not be able to see them with your eyes. He needs to be seen by a vet because those mites (if he does have them ) are easy to treat with the proper medication. I hope this helps. Best wishes!

Hello, Tickelles is clearly a very happy, healthy guinea pig! Jumping isn’t typically the first thing one thinks of when thinking of guinea pigs, but if Tickelles is athletic enough to do it and has the space to do it safely, then it’s fine. Just make sure there aren’t things that she could get a foot or leg caught in, like a wire shelf or other cage item. Make sure her bedding is nice a deep in the event she should fall. Otherwise, tell Tickelles to enjoy herself!

This can occur due to many different causes including infections, inflammation, tumors, and other causes. If Mocha is eating, drinking, pooping and peeing normally right now, you can monitor Mocha for now. I would recommend however to have Mocha seen by a rabbit veterinarian as soon as you are able to get an appointment. I would also recommend trying to get one of these episodes on tape if you can, so if you see it happening try to record it. Best of luck with Mocha.

Monitor Popcorn closely over the next day or two for any signs of decreased activity, limping or swelling anywhere on his body, any reduction in appetite, drinking, urination or defecation. If you notice any of these signs, you should take Popcorn to the veterinarian immediately. If Popcorn is behaving normally then there should be no cause for concern.
