My guinea pig fell from a foot high cage. Should I be worried?

If he is eating and walking normally right now, I would suggest that you monitor him closely for the new few hours. Sometimes after a fall or other trauma, they don't show any evidence of injury due to them being so afraid. But, over time, that can change and you may see him limp or his appetite or attitude become abnormal. If you see any changes, I would recommend taking him into a veterinarian immediately as he may have hurt himself when he fell. Please do not give your guinea pig any human medications, as many of these are harmful for our fuzzy friends.

Accidents happen. Everyone cuts a quick on occasion and animals often seem sensitive for a short time afterwards, and some even limp slightly for a few hours. As long as Rubix continues eating and acting normally, and the limp resolves in a few hours, I wouldn't worry much about the fall. However, if the limp continues or Rubix has any other changes, please take him to his vet to have his back and legs examined.

I'm so sorry about Pig. Ideally he needs to see a vet as he may have a spinal cord lesion, pelvic fracture or other fracture. He may have a collapsed disc or broken vertebra. Spinal cord lesions may not always start with full paralysis. He needs to be kept fairly quiet to help allow for healing but knowing the extent of his injury will help determine if he can recover. He also may need pain medication which is only available by a prescription from the vet. After exam the vet may likely recomend radiographs to look for the lesion. The sooner a diagnosis is made and treatment started the better his chance of recovery.

Hello, A fall could cause a traumatic brain injury, a spinal injury, bone fractures, or internal bleeding. If Casper has returned to normal activity levels and is eating well, he is likely fine. As you mentioned, guinea pigs are good at hiding signs of pain. He may benefit from some prescription pain medication. Please do not give him any over-the-counter medication as it can be toxic. In the meantime or if there is not a veterinarian in your area that sees guinea pigs, be sure to keep him quiet. Offer him plenty of food and water, but I would not handle him for 24 hours to allow him to rest. I hope this information helps!

Thanks for reaching out. Carbohydrates are not a normal part of a guinea pigs diet, as the starches can feed abnormal bacteria and lead to other concerns (diarrhea, bloat, etc). If they act uncomfortable, lethargic or develop diarrhea, a veterinary visit is needed for proper diagnosis and treatments.
