Why is my guinea pig eating its own poop? Should I be worried?

This is a normal poop. Actually the round on should be a bit bigger and squishyer as it is from the caecum. Make sure your piggy drinks enough fresh water, and offer lots of greens and a bit of cucumber, This will help the digestion. One often does not see the round poop pellets, as guinea pigs tend to eat them in order to keep the bacteria in their gut healthy.

Hello there! Unfortunately for us, this is a very normal behavior for rodents. The medical term for poop-eating is coprophagy, and in hamsters, it's healthy for them to do so. Many animals, like rodents, that eat a mostly plant-based diet don't get all the nutrients from their food the first time it passes through their digestive system, so they literally digest it a second time by eating their feces. As long as she is a eating, drinking and acting normally I wouldn’t be too concerned. Also, make sure she is pooping daily and not becoming constipated. If she goes without pooping or her behavior changes, then I would have your vet take a look at her to make sure she isn’t constipated. I hope this helps!

As I'm sure you know hay is very good for them, often though gubiea pigs will prefer the pellets as they are tastier. It really doesn't matter when they eat their hay as long as they do. I would let them eat their pellets in the day time and then they can just have hay at night.

Your photo is a little blurry but from what I can see here these appear to be normal guinea pig feces. If your guinea pig starts having loose stools, stools that are very hard or is producing less feces or eating less these would be causes for concern.

Hello. Any change in formulation of feed can change the color & consistency of the feces, especially in hindgut fermenters like guinea pigs. It does take time for the bacteria to adapt. But if your pigs are only picking out the good parts, then it makes sense to change back to their regular hay.
