My guinea pig's poop changed color with new hay. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old

I bought new hay the other day, a different brand and a different type of hay. (I normally get oxbow orchard grass hay) the next day I noticed that their poop is a dry caramel color. Today I'm noticing a lot more darker with caramel color. Could it be that they don't like the brand? Also I notice them only picking out the grassy parts of the hay and the fuzzy tops. Them not eating enough of this hay is that the reason for their change in poop color? I plan to switch back in a few days.

Hello. Any change in formulation of feed can change the color & consistency of the feces, especially in hindgut fermenters like guinea pigs. It does take time for the bacteria to adapt. But if your pigs are only picking out the good parts, then it makes sense to change back to their regular hay. This should not be too upsetting to their GI tract since you are doing a relatively fast switch back. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Thanks for reaching out about Miss Piggy. Yes, soft stool can be a result of stress, but stress also lowers the immune system that can lead to bacterial overgrowth or parasitic overgrowth. Since she is still eating well and acting well, try limiting her diet to hay only for 1-2 days, to see if that will firm the stool. Vegetables and fruit can be too rich for the diet and lead to soft stool also. If the clinical signs does not improve, seek an appointment with a veterinarian with experience in companion exotic mammals.

Guinea pig not eating hay after moving? Is this normal behavior?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The new environment may have made Alexis not want to eat her hay. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, it is normal for her to eat less hay (or none) than usual. You can also try putting a small amount of water on her hay to see if she is more interested in it. You should change the moistened hay daily as it can promote mold growth. My guinea pig has dry poop and won't eat hay, but eats veggies.

It sounds like Kinako may not be getting enough fibre from her diet, so her poop is small and dry. Make sure you offer her fresh hay and pelleted food made for g.pigs that has a high fibre content. Raspberries are higher in fibre, so worth trying to offer her some. If this problem continues, your vet should examine her teeth to make sure there are no sharp spurs which may prevent her chewing properly. Change her water daily.

Why does my guinea pig cry at pellets & get soft poop from veggies?

Make sure brownie has plenty of fresh grass hay such as Timothy hay as the majority of his diet. He will also need some supplementation with vitamin C powder's or liquid and the fresh fruits and veggies. On a balanced diet he shouldn't be having soft stools so you may just need to decrease the portion size of his fresh foods. My guinea pig's poop is small and infrequent. What should I do?

Not having grass for one day is not likely to be the reason, gut stasis could be one of the reasons, if it is the same by tomorrow and the appetite is decreased as well, you will need to take him to the vet to get it treated.

My guinea pig's poop is suddenly much bigger. Is this normal?

As long as she is a eating, drinking and acting normally I wouldn’t be too concerned. Also, make sure she is pooping daily and not becoming constipated. If she goes without pooping or her behavior changes, then I would have your vet take a look at her to make sure she isn’t constipated. I hope this helps!
