My guinea pig has ear infection, can't walk, shaking. Is it dying?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 7 days old | 2 lbs

Today, our 6 month old female guinea pig could not walk and appeared to have lost its equalibrium. 4 hours ago, we took her to a vet and he noticed she had a right ear infection with noticable protruding puss. He said we need a cream which I have to get tomorrow. He did nothing else. Now it's the evening and the guinea pig is laying on it's back with it's kegs shaking as if it is getting shocked every five seconds. It looks like it is going to die. She prefers this position.

Poor Ginger, I don't see how she is going to eat and go to the toilet in this condition. The infection is possibly into the inner ear and does warrant some antibiotics. I would also makes sure that there isn' t a foreign body at the base of this problem. I would recommend to have her rechecked as soon as possible as she will need supportive care. Hope this helps !
