My guinea pig broke his leg. What food and meds help healing?

Thanks for your question about Theo and Leo. I was not sure if your question was asking about keeping the bones strong or helping with the joints, so I’ll try to speak to both. For the bones, the most important nutrient to keep them strong will be calcium. Thankfully, you won’t need to supplement anything in the diet to ensure that calcium levels are adequate, as long as you are feeding a high quality grass hay (and they are eating it, of course). If it is the joints that you are concerned about, due to the potential for arthritis after a bone heals in a suboptimal fashion, then you’ll have a few options. A supplement that you can use is the Oxbow joint supplement- it is a tablet that guinea pigs can eat on a daily basis. Other medications, such as anti-inflammatories and other pain relievers, would require a veterinary visit to see if they are needed. Please don’t give the guinea pigs any human medications at home, as many of these are harmful to our furry friends. Just continue to feed him his normal diet. If the vet said he's a healthy weight, I would not worry about it. It's normal there is to be some muscle mass loss around that leg because it's not use in use. Once his leg his healed and he can use it again, the muscle mass will build back up. I hope this helps.

I would endeavour to get her sn emergency appointment tonight to get some pain relief as I imagine she will be sore. However if you cannot I would move her into a smaller area with a soft material on the floor and no loose bedding or objects thst she could catch herself on. Feed and water as usual. Treatment will vary depending on severity of injury, it may be medicine or could be surgery if the leg is broken. Again cost will vary massively depending on the injury.

Unfortunately it is impossible for anyone to know in what condition the leg is without a physical examination at the very least, we won't be able to tell you if it could heal or if it can't without it.

The bandage in this case is for sure playing a major role and could be related to stress and inappetence. I would give her some more time but if not recovering her normal appetite in a week or if actually loosing it more, then I would recommend an immediate check up

Oh dear, it does sound very concerning - I am worried that Brownie may have fractured her leg or foot from that description. She needs to be seen by a vet right away. Your vet will likely want to x-ray that leg to determine if (and specifically where) there's a fracture, and can then discuss the best way to help her heal, as well as start her on the necessary pain medication. Unfortunately there's nothing safe and over-the-counter that you can give her to help, so keep her safe and confined until you can have her seen by a vet. Hope this helps and she feels better soon!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cesar! What a scary time! I am glad he will be okay. I would feed him a commercial puppy food since he is under 1 year of age. I like Royal Canin, Hill's Since diet and Purina Proplan or Focus. There isn't anything extra needed just balanced nutrition for a growing dog. Good luck!
