My puppy broke his leg. What food helps bone healing and strength?

Hello. The leg was splinted & often this is all that is necessary to heal a bone. There is no one food that is necessary for healing bones. Just continue your pig on a good quality food & make sure your Vit. C is as fresh as possible. Anti-inflammatories like meloxicam & carprofen are used in GPs & with a broken leg I would certainly recommend he be on some. If it is the same area that is broken then it could be due to the bone just being weakened from the previous break. If it is a different bone, it could just be coincidence or due to brittle bones. You could keep him on a dog multivitamin long term. I would also make sure he is on a high quality dog food like science diet or royal canin which have all the nutrients he needs. Since he is over 7, I would also consider putting him on a senior formula dog food and possibly some joint supplements like dasuquin. Your vet will be able to give you more information on the best treatment for this fracture once he has seen the x-rays. Until then, keep Jack strictly confined. I hope this helps!

There is no food that promotes extra bone growth. It is best to feed your pet a balanced large breed food that helps promote normal bone growth, such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba, Natural Balance or Fromm large breed puppy. To promote healthy joints and combat arthritis, it is recommended to wait until your pet is at least 1 year of age, then you can start daily joint supplements such as Dasuquin, Rejuvenate or Cosequin. Also its best to not over-exert your puppy while he is growing. This means don't have rough play or exercise for more than 20-30 min increments, 3 times a day. Great question! Jasper should get a high quality dog food, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet. He should also be fed a large breed formulated food to support his nutritional needs. You can also consider giving Jasper glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function.

Poor Otto! In general puppies heal very well. The only thing to watch for is that a splint can cause temporary laxity in the joint ligaments but this typically resolves.
