My guinea pig has a black bald patch under eye. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered

Hello. My 10 week old guinea pig, Obey, woke up yesterday with a black bald patch ( very small) under his eye. I did some research and worried it might of been the start of fungal infection such as ring worm. So I went and purchased a cream from my local pet shop and applied this yesterday. Since then it hasn’t got worse. But it hasn’t got better. He has been really scratching it and has scratched himself very slightly. I just wondered if you think the cream needs more time to work?

Fungal infections can take weeks to months to resolve. Ideally, Obey should be physically examined by your veterinarian for a definitive diagnosis. An e-collar (cone) should be placed on him to prevent scratching.
