My gerbil has a red lump near his testicles. Is it a prolapse?

Gerbils may develop tumors associated with the scent gland. Without an exam, diagnosis is difficult. You can monitor it for rapid change or growth and then have him examined or you can have him in by your veterinarian sooner. A fine needle aspirate can be done to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. Once the lump is identified, you can discuss removal with your veterinarian.

Rats are notorious for getting tumors. That is what this looks like however, the location of me makes me worry it could be some sort of prolapse. You will need to get her to a vet for an exam so you can get a diagnosis and then know how to go about treating her.

She is "old" for a gerbil, but more information would be needed before determine a course of action, let alone euthanasia.

Thanks for reaching out about Lemon and including photos. Even though the pictures are slightly out of focus, what is observed is the penis and probable rectal prolapse. Causes are likely straining to defecate or urinate. A veterinary visit is recommended as soon as possible because once the rectal tissue dries, unlikely to be saved. Trying to keep it moist with a wet paper towel might work for now but is not a treatment. Good luck.

I am sorry to hear about Thaddeus. I would unfortunately be concerned he is suffering from a condition called "wet tail" or proliferative ileitis. Even if you were able to replace the prolapse if that is what your hamster has (I cannot really tell from this photo other than to see the hind end is raw and the fur is soiled/wet), we still have to treat the underlying cause of the prolapse.
