My gerbil has a black lump on his scent gland. Could it be a tumor?

Glandular tumors are often malignant cancers so if he is getting more tumors, it may be best to euthanize him. Without seeing him myself and having the entire medical history it is difficult for me to say though. As long as he is eating/drinking and using the bathroom normally you can wait and see but if his quality of life is (or starts to) suffer you should consider euthanasia. Personally I don't think surgery will be curative. Those tumors, in that location, are difficult to completely remove so recurrence is common.

This could be an intestinal infection or foreign body can lead to straining and the prolapse. A veterinary visit is highly recommended, as soon as possible as even though seems to come and go, so could become more serious. Try cleaning the tissue with a mild soap. Antibiotics can be dispensed for minor infection. A fine needle aspirate can be done to collect samples for pathology. Lumps can alwys be a tumor, a cyst, or an Abscess. When it is black and solid, it could be melanoma, when it is black and fluctuating, it could be a hematoma. Unfortunately you are correct in assuming this is probably a cancerous mass, especially if it has grown quickly. Keep in mind that the life span of a hamsters is only about 2-3 years.
