My 3-year-old gerbil's stomach is bloated and heavy. Is she sick?

I have 2 female gerbils that are 3 years old, ive never had any issues with their health and they both seem to be enjoying burrowing, eating and drinking and coming to me happily. today ive noticed Robyn's stomach appears to be very bloated and she feels very heavy compared to usual, she lets me touch her and is still very active. Could she just be bloated or is it likely to be a medical condition with her being 3? Thanks

Thanks for reaching out about Robyn. A distended stomach could be bloat, but also infected foreign body, internal tumor or other concern. A veterinary visit is recommended either way, the sooner the better. She is getting up there in years, but age is not a disease.

My gerbil has a red lump, isn't eating, shaking. What should I do?

Without a physical exam, it is difficult to determine what the lump is and what her medical status is currently. Ideally, she should be examined by your veterinarian. Antibiotics can be dispensed for minor infection. A fine needle aspirate can be done to collect samples for pathology. She is "old" for a gerbil, but more information would be needed before determine a course of action, let alone euthanasia.

Thanks for reaching out about Lucy and including photos. If she is lethargic and bloated she probably still needs to see a veterinarian to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Female hamsters can also have reproductive problems (uterine neoplasia, pyometras and more. Urinary problems can also cause similar clinical signs. Your local veterinarian should be contacted again, as diagnostic tests might need to be performed to achieve a diagnosis. Try not to give mineral oil or yogurt again, as this can cause serious gastrointestinal upset. Good luck.

Is surgery safe for an old, stressed gerbil with a belly lump?

Anaesthesia can be very hard on small mammals. In the case of an older gerbil I feel that it would be a lot to put the little thing through for what may be not a lot of time. Personally I would leave the lump alone if it is not infected or causing discomfort. If the lump starts to interfere with his quality of life I think it would be kinder to have him put to sleep rather than put him through surgery.

Why is my hamster's belly suddenly big and she's gaining weight?

Abdominal size increases can be caused by fluid build up called ascites (liver, renal, heart diseases) or an organ enlargement. Kidney enlargement due to polycystic renal disease or cancer is not unusual in hamsters. A veterinary visit is recommended for diagnosis and treatment, quality of life can be improved. Good luck.
