My gerbil has a large armpit growth. Is it cancer? Do I need a vet?

Hi, my 2 yo gerbil has a large growth under her arm (besically the armpit region) and it's quite large (size of a teaspoon of peanut butter) she doesn't look as if it's bothering her but ive been told that tumors in gerbils are often malignant and that at her stage there's little chance of her surviving even with surgery. Should I take her to the vet to have them tell me what I already assume or should I go and take a chance that it's not cancerous?

Unfortunately you are correct in assuming this is probably a cancerous mass, especially if it has grown quickly. Keep in mind that the life span of a hamsters is only about 2-3 years. This may help in your decision making process. If you are unwilling or unable to have surgery performed to remove it then just keep Crackers as comfortable as possible. If her energy level and appetite decrease then you would have to consider that the cancer is likely spreading. I hope this helps. Best of luck.

Hello. Unfortunately, cancer in a 2 year old hamster is very common. If it smells , it means the tumor has probably outgrown its blood supply & the tissues are beginning to die. Unless you have the tumor removed, the kindest thing to do is euthanize Poppy. This will not get better on its own & will just continue to fester & smell worse. My hamster has a discolored belly and armpit lump. Could it be cancer?

I am so very sorry to hear of your concern for Snoopy. It is difficult for us to say without being able to palpate/feel the area. A tumor or cancer is possible but we could also possibly have an abscess or wound here- if he had somehow injured himself on his cage or if he is with another hamster who injured him. I think it is worth bringing Snoopy to a vet if you are able for an exam.

My gerbil's scent gland tumor is growing. Surgery or euthanasia?

Glandular tumors are often malignant cancers so if he is getting more tumors, it may be best to euthanize him. Without seeing him myself and having the entire medical history it is difficult for me to say though. As long as he is eating/drinking and using the bathroom normally you can wait and see but if his quality of life is (or starts to) suffer you should consider euthanasia. Personally I don't think surgery will be curative. Those tumors, in that location, are difficult to completely remove so recurrence is common.

My old dwarf hamster has a leg lump. How can I make him comfortable?

These types of tumors are very common in old hamsters, they do tend to grow fast too. it's not possible to know how long he has left, but probably not very long. if the problem is affecting him locally only, there is a surgical option to have it removed, which is the only thing that can help at this point.

Why does my hamster have a lump behind its front leg? Is it cancer?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!

My gerbil has a black lump on his scent gland. Could it be a tumor?

Gerbils may develop tumors associated with the scent gland. Without an exam, diagnosis is difficult. You can monitor it for rapid change or growth and then have him examined or you can have him in by your veterinarian sooner. A fine needle aspirate can be done to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. Once the lump is identified, you can discuss removal with your veterinarian.
