My old dwarf hamster has a leg lump. How can I make him comfortable?

My Dwarf Hamster is roughly 2 years old, i'm not quite sure. I cleaned his cage recently(a couple weeks ago) and didn't see or feel anything on him that looked strange till today. He has a huge lump under his front right leg, he's having a hard time doing hamster things like climbing his tubes & running on his wheel cause the lump is very big to him. I'd like to know how long I have left with him and what I can to make him more comfortable.

These types of tumors are very common in old hamsters, they do tend to grow fast too. it's not possible to know how long he has left, but probably not very long. if the problem is affecting him locally only, there is a surgical option to have it removed, which is the only thing that can help at this point.

I would need to see it to confirm but it is probably a tumor, in hamsters these tumors are usually malignant and not treatable, surgery is a possibility but it would personally not recommend it. other than that there is very little that can be done, if the lump ulcerates then antibiotic treatment can be attempted to treat the secondary infection.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. I am sorry to hear about your hamster. With a swelling like this we would worry about a variety of problems including a cellulitis or inflammation/infection of the tissues, swelling due to trauma like a broken bone, swelling due to edema or disruption of lymph flow, or unfortunately a tumor. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine your hamster to determine the source of the swelling and the possible treatment options.
