Can a ferret's smell harm my 5-week-old baby or infant?

It may be stressful at first if your rabbit is not used to the smell, but should get better over time. Spraying other chemicals such as essential oils etc is probably NOT a good idea as that may be irritating to your rabbit's (and ferret's) bodies and may cause more harm than just having the ferret odor. Keeping the area cleaned and well ventilated is a better solution to minimize odors rather than mask it.

Ferrets can get certain strains of influenza from people, so it would probably be best to make sure no one has an active illness before getting the ferret. Kits are more susceptible than adults for getting severe disease, so it's good to keep that in mind when choosing a ferret. If you’re going to do this, hold onto your ferret at all times to pull him out of harms reach if needed. If your puppy is particularly exhuberant, it might be a good idea to have a friend or family member hold on to his collar while you hold the ferret. Firstly, you should prevent him from drinking or licking up any more urine. A small amount will likely not harm him, but larger amounts may cause gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and diarrhea). Keep a bowl or bottle of fresh, clean water available to him at all times. If he becomes lethargic, stops eating or begins to vomit or have diarrhea then he should be examined by your veterinarian.

Thanks for reaching out about Puck. Strong odors are not normal in neutered/de-scented ferrets. Young ferrets are also unlikely to have adrenal tumors that can cause odors. Concerns wound be around an infected scent gland, urinary tract infection or other endocrine problem. A veterinary visit is recommended to assist in diagnostic and treatment plans. Good luck.

This should not be a problem, as a matter of fact, this kind of close contact with animals at a young age can help your baby develop a strong immune system and be less likely to develop pet allergies. With that, it is likely that your beagle is going to know that the ferret is in the house, and may be focused on getting to the ferret despite it being behind closed doors. Depending on the dog, some will bark or scratch at doors to try to get to animals behind them, and others will not pursue them. If it is feasible, it may be a good idea to see how Eddy reacts to a ferret prior to committing to own one. If he doesn't respond favorably, it may be in the best interest of the ferret (as well as for Eddy) to not get him. The reason for this is that ferrets need quite a bit of exercise, so getting the ferret out for play time will be very important.
