Will my aggressive beagle react to a ferret's smell through a door?

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | 130 lbs

So I am getting a ferret but I have an agressive beagle. If I let eddy outside and quickly bring the ferret upstairs to my daughters room and shut the door that leads upstairs, will my dog attack the door or will the scent not be that bad?

Thank you for your question. Ferrets have a very strong smell to most people, and beagles have an incredible sense of smell. With that, it is likely that your beagle is going to know that the ferret is in the house, and may be focused on getting to the ferret despite it being behind closed doors. Depending on the dog, some will bark or scratch at doors to try to get to animals behind them, and others will not pursue them.
If it is feasible, it may be a good idea to see how Eddy reacts to a ferret prior to committing to own one. If he doesn't respond favorably, it may be in the best interest of the ferret (as well as for Eddy) to not get him. The reason for this is that ferrets need quite a bit of exercise, so getting the ferret out for play time will be very important.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your possible new ferret. Yes, Eddy will be able to smell the ferret even if they are kept on separate floors. This does not necessarily mean that he will try to attack that room, but he will smell his new housemate. If you get the ferret, you will need to supervise your dog carefully while he is adjusting. If you’re going to do this, hold onto your ferret at all times to pull him out of harms reach if needed. If your puppy is particularly exhuberant, it might be a good idea to have a friend or family member hold on to his collar while you hold the ferret. Should I introduce my Cane Corso puppy to ferrets right away?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh my goodness your fur babies are adorable!! I recommend introducing them while Mack is young. He will be a very large dog when full grown. It is best he learns how to behave with with ferrets now, so he gets used to them. I would have Mack on a leash at all times when the ferrets are out. This is a great time to teach Mack how to "leave it" when he attempts to chase or mouth the ferrets.Knowing now, rather than later, that he will be aggressive or violent with them will give you time to fix the behavior or to avoid their interactions. Can a ferret's smell stress my rabbit to a life-threatening degree?

It may be stressful at first if your rabbit is not used to the smell, but should get better over time. Spraying other chemicals such as essential oils etc is probably NOT a good idea as that may be irritating to your rabbit's (and ferret's) bodies and may cause more harm than just having the ferret odor. Keeping the area cleaned and well ventilated is a better solution to minimize odors rather than mask it.

My ferret runs from me and hates being held. Is he afraid or playing?

If you have only had Eddie for a short while, he may not be very used to you, or people in general. I recommend moving slowly with him, and offering treats when he approaches you. Ferrets tend to "remember" negative experiences, so it is important to be as gentle with him as possible early on. Can a ferret's smell harm my 5-week-old baby or infant?

I don't think the smell alone would cause harm, but it is always best to make sure your children wash their hands and that your ferret's enclosure is kept clean to prevent the spread of any germs. Keeping Piper in a different room that your baby is also a good idea for general safety unless both are supervised.

My puppy attacks my ferrets. How can I train her to leave them alone?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Basic training is very important. She is really young and it will take time. To protect the ferrets when they are out she needs to be leashed and with treats trained to "leave it" and "come." Or she is crated when they are out. Their cage shouldn't be on the ground where she can get to it. Right now the focus needs to be to protect the ferrets until she learns to not go after them. I hope this helps!
